Genesis 5-7

From Adam to Noah

This is the record[a] of the family line[b] of Adam.

When God created humankind,[c] he made them[d] in the likeness of God. He created them male and female; when they were created, he blessed them and named them “humankind.”[e]

When[f] Adam had lived 130 years he fathered a son in his own likeness, according to his image, and he named him Seth. The length of time Adam lived[g] after he became the father of Seth was 800 years; during this time he had[h] other[i] sons and daughters. The entire lifetime[j] of Adam was 930 years, and then he died.[k]

When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of[l] Enosh. Seth lived 807 years after he became the father of Enosh, and he had[m] other[n] sons and daughters. The entire lifetime of Seth was 912 years, and then he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. 10 Enosh lived 815 years after he became the father of Kenan, and he had other sons and daughters. 11 The entire lifetime of Enosh was 905 years, and then he died.

12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived 840 years after he became the father of Mahalalel, and he had other sons and daughters. 14 The entire lifetime of Kenan was 910 years, and then he died.

15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived 830 years after he became the father of Jared, and he had other sons and daughters. 17 The entire lifetime of Mahalalel was 895 years, and then he died.

18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. 19 Jared lived 800 years after he became the father of Enoch, and he had other sons and daughters. 20 The entire lifetime of Jared was 962 years, and then he died.

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God[o] for 300 years,[p] and he had other[q] sons and daughters. 23 The entire lifetime of Enoch was 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and then he disappeared[r] because God took[s] him away.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived 782 years after he became the father of Lamech, and he had other[t] sons and daughters. 27 The entire lifetime of Methuselah was 969 years, and then he died.

28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah,[u] saying, “This one will bring us comfort[v] from our labor and from the painful toil of our hands because of the ground that the Lord has cursed.” 30 Lamech lived 595 years after he became the father of Noah, and he had other[w] sons and daughters. 31 The entire lifetime of Lamech was 777 years, and then he died.

32 After Noah was 500 years old, he[x] became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

God’s Grief over Humankind’s Wickedness

When humankind[y] began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born[z] to them,[aa] the sons of God[ab] saw that the daughters of humankind were beautiful. Thus they took wives for themselves from any they chose. So the Lord said, “My Spirit will not remain in[ac] humankind indefinitely,[ad] since[ae] they[af] are mortal.[ag] They[ah] will remain for 120 more years.”[ai]

The Nephilim[aj] were on the earth in those days (and also after this)[ak] when the sons of God would sleep with[al] the daughters of humankind, who gave birth to their children.[am] They were the mighty heroes[an] of old, the famous men.[ao]

But the Lord saw[ap] that the wickedness of humankind had become great on the earth. Every inclination[aq] of the thoughts[ar] of their minds[as] was only evil[at] all the time.[au] The Lord regretted[av] that he had made humankind on the earth, and he was highly offended.[aw] So the Lord said, “I will wipe humankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—everything from humankind to animals,[ax] including creatures that move on the ground and birds of the air, for I regret that I have made them.”

But[ay] Noah found favor[az] in the sight of[ba] the Lord.

The Judgment of the Flood

This is the account of Noah.[bb]

Noah was a godly man; he was blameless[bc] among his contemporaries.[bd] He[be] walked with[bf] God. 10 Noah had[bg] three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11 The earth was ruined[bh] in the sight of[bi] God; the earth was filled with violence.[bj] 12 God saw the earth, and indeed[bk] it was ruined,[bl] for all living creatures[bm] on the earth were sinful.[bn] 13 So God said[bo] to Noah, “I have decided that all living creatures must die,[bp] for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Now I am about to destroy[bq] them and the earth. 14 Make[br] for yourself an ark of cypress[bs] wood. Make rooms in the ark, and cover[bt] it with pitch inside and out. 15 This is how you should make it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high.[bu] 16 Make a roof for the ark and finish it, leaving 18 inches[bv] from the top.[bw] Put a door in the side of the ark, and make lower, middle, and upper decks. 17 I am about to bring[bx] floodwaters[by] on the earth to destroy[bz] from under the sky all the living creatures that have the breath of life in them.[ca] Everything that is on the earth will die, 18 but I will confirm[cb] my covenant with you. You will enter[cc] the ark—you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You must bring into the ark two of every kind of living creature from all flesh,[cd] male and female, to keep them alive[ce] with you. 20 Of the birds after their kinds, and of the cattle after their kinds, and of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you so you can keep them alive.[cf] 21 And you must take[cg] for yourself every kind of food[ch] that is eaten,[ci] and gather it together.[cj] It will be food for you and for them.”

22 And Noah did all[ck] that God commanded him—he did indeed.[cl]

The Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, for I consider you godly among this generation.[cm] You must take with you seven pairs[cn] of every kind of clean animal,[co] the male and its mate,[cp] two of every kind of unclean animal, the male and its mate, and also seven pairs[cq] of every kind of bird in the sky, male and female,[cr] to preserve their offspring[cs] on the face of the entire earth. For in seven days[ct] I will cause it to rain[cu] on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the ground every living thing that I have made.”

And Noah did all[cv] that the Lord commanded him.

Noah[cw] was 600 years old when the floodwaters engulfed[cx] the earth. Noah entered the ark along with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives because of[cy] the floodwaters. Pairs[cz] of clean animals, of unclean animals, of birds, and of everything that creeps along the ground, male and female, came into the ark to Noah,[da] just as God had commanded him.[db] 10 And after seven days the floodwaters engulfed the earth.[dc]

11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month—on that day all the fountains of the great deep[dd] burst open and the floodgates of the heavens[de] were opened. 12 And the rain fell[df] on the earth forty days and forty nights.

13 On that very day Noah entered the ark, accompanied by his sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth, along with his wife and his sons’ three wives.[dg] 14 They entered,[dh] along with every living creature after its kind, every animal after its kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, everything with wings.[di] 15 Pairs[dj] of all creatures[dk] that have the breath of life came into the ark to Noah. 16 Those that entered were male and female,[dl] just as God commanded him. Then the Lord shut him in.

17 The flood engulfed the earth for forty days. As the waters increased, they lifted the ark and raised it above the earth. 18 The waters completely overwhelmed[dm] the earth, and the ark floated[dn] on the surface of the waters. 19 The waters completely inundated[do] the earth so that even[dp] all the high mountains under the entire sky were covered. 20 The waters rose more than 20 feet[dq] above the mountains.[dr] 21 And all living things[ds] that moved on the earth died, including the birds, domestic animals, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all humankind. 22 Everything on dry land that had the breath[dt] of life in its nostrils died. 23 So the Lord[du] destroyed[dv] every living thing that was on the surface of the ground, including people, animals, creatures that creep along the ground, and birds of the sky.[dw] They were wiped off the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark survived.[dx] 24 The waters prevailed over[dy] the earth for 150 days.

Matthew 3:7-4:11

But when he saw many Pharisees[a] and Sadducees[b] coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore produce fruit[c] that proves your[d] repentance, and don’t think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’[e] For I tell you that God can raise up children for Abraham from these stones! 10 Even now the ax is laid at[f] the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 “I baptize you with water, for repentance, but the one coming after me is more powerful than I am—I am not worthy[g] to carry his sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.[h] 12 His winnowing fork[i] is in his hand, and he will clean out his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the storehouse,[j] but the chaff he will burn up with inextinguishable fire!”[k]

The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John to be baptized by him in the Jordan River.[l] 14 But John[m] tried to prevent[n] him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me?” 15 So Jesus replied[o] to him, “Let it happen now,[p] for it is right for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John[q] yielded[r] to him. 16 After[s] Jesus was baptized, just as he was coming up out of the water, the[t] heavens[u] opened[v] and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove[w] and coming to rest[x] on him. 17 And[y] a voice from heaven said,[z] “This is my one dear Son;[aa] in him[ab] I take great delight.”[ac]

The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness[ad] to be tempted by the devil. After he fasted forty days and forty nights he was famished.[ae] The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”[af] But he answered,[ag] “It is written, ‘Man[ah] does not live[ai] by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”[aj] Then the devil took him to the holy city,[ak] had him stand[al] on the highest point[am] of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you[an] and ‘with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”[ao] Jesus said to him, “Once again it is written: ‘You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’”[ap] Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur.[aq] And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you throw yourself to the ground and worship[ar] me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go away,[as] Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”[at] 11 Then the devil left him, and angels[au] came and began ministering to his needs.

Psalm 3

Psalm 3[a]

A psalm of David, written when he fled from his son Absalom.[b]

Lord, how[c] numerous are my enemies!
Many attack me.[d]
Many say about me,
“God will not deliver him.”[e] (Selah)[f]
But you, Lord, are a shield that protects me;[g]
you are my glory[h] and the one who restores me.[i]
To the Lord I cried out,[j]
and he answered me from his holy hill.[k] (Selah)
I rested and slept;
I awoke,[l] for the Lord protects[m] me.
I am not afraid[n] of the multitude of people[o]
who attack me from all directions.[p]
Rise up,[q] Lord!
Deliver me, my God!
Yes,[r] you will strike[s] all my enemies on the jaw;
you will break the teeth[t] of the wicked.[u]
The Lord delivers;[v]
you show favor to your people.[w] (Selah)

Proverbs 1:10-19

Admonition to Avoid Easy but Unjust Riches

10 My child, if sinners[a] try to entice[b] you,
do not consent![c]
11 If they say, “Come with us!
We will[d] lie in wait[e] to shed blood;[f]
we will ambush[g] an innocent person[h] capriciously.[i]
12 We will swallow them alive[j] like Sheol,[k]
those full of vigor[l] like those going down to the Pit.
13 We will seize[m] all kinds of precious wealth;[n]
we will fill our houses with plunder.[o]
14 Join with us![p]
We will all share[q] equally in what we steal.”[r]
15 My child, do not go down[s] their way,[t]
withhold yourself[u] from their path;[v]
16 for they[w] are eager[x] to inflict harm,[y]
and they hasten[z] to shed blood.[aa]
17 Surely it is futile to spread[ab] a net
in plain sight of[ac] any bird,[ad]
18 but these men lie in wait for their own blood,[ae]
they ambush their own lives![af]
19 Such[ag] are the ways[ah] of all who gain profit unjustly;[ai]
it[aj] takes away the life[ak] of those who obtain it![al]
