5 Now Lot, who was traveling[a] with Abram, also had[b] flocks, herds, and tents. 6 But the land could[c] not support them while they were living side by side.[d] Because their possessions were so great, they were not able to live[e] alongside one another. 7 So there were quarrels[f] between Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s herdsmen.[g] (Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.)[h]
8 Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no quarreling between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are close relatives.[i] 9 Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself now from me. If you go[j] to the left, then I’ll go to the right, but if you go to the right, then I’ll go to the left.”
10 Lot looked up and saw[k] the whole region[l] of the Jordan. He noticed[m] that all of it was well watered (this was before the Lord obliterated[n] Sodom and Gomorrah)[o] like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt,[p] all the way to Zoar. 11 Lot chose for himself the whole region of the Jordan and traveled[q] toward the east.
So the relatives separated from each other.[r] 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled among the cities of the Jordan plain[s] and pitched his tents next to Sodom. 13 (Now[t] the people[u] of Sodom were extremely wicked rebels against the Lord.)[v]
14 After Lot had departed, the Lord said to Abram,[w] “Look[x] from the place where you stand to the north, south, east, and west. 15 I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants[y] forever. 16 And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted.[z] 17 Get up and[aa] walk[ab] throughout the land,[ac] for I will give it to you.”
18 So Abram moved his tents and went to live[ad] by the oaks[ae] of Mamre in Hebron, and he built an altar to the Lord there.
The Blessing of Victory for God’s People
14 At that time[af] Amraphel king of Shinar,[ag] Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations[ah] 2 went to war[ai] against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).[aj] 3 These last five kings[ak] joined forces[al] in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).[am] 4 For twelve years[an] they had served Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year[ao] they rebelled.[ap] 5 In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings who were his allies came and defeated[aq] the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim, 6 and the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is near the desert.[ar] 7 Then they attacked En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh) again,[as] and they conquered all the territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar.
8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and prepared for battle. In the Valley of Siddim they met[at] 9 Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations,[au] Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar. Four kings fought against[av] five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits.[aw] When the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, they fell into them,[ax] but some survivors[ay] fled to the hills.[az] 11 The four victorious kings[ba] took all the possessions and food of Sodom and Gomorrah and left. 12 They also took Abram’s nephew[bb] Lot and his possessions when[bc] they left, for Lot[bd] was living in Sodom.[be]
13 A fugitive[bf] came and told Abram the Hebrew.[bg] Now Abram was living by the oaks[bh] of Mamre the Amorite, the brother[bi] of Eshcol and Aner. (All these were allied by treaty[bj] with Abram.)[bk] 14 When Abram heard that his nephew[bl] had been taken captive, he mobilized[bm] his 318 trained men who had been born in his household, and he pursued the invaders[bn] as far as Dan.[bo] 15 Then, during the night,[bp] Abram[bq] divided his forces[br] against them and defeated them. He chased them as far as Hobah, which is north[bs] of Damascus. 16 He retrieved all the stolen property.[bt] He also brought back his nephew Lot and his possessions, as well as the women and the rest of[bu] the people.
17 After Abram[bv] returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet Abram[bw] in the Valley of Shaveh (known as the King’s Valley).[bx] 18 Melchizedek king of Salem[by] brought out bread and wine. (Now he was the priest of the Most High God.)[bz] 19 He blessed Abram, saying,
“Blessed be Abram by[ca] the Most High God,
Creator[cb] of heaven and earth.[cc]
20 Worthy of praise is[cd] the Most High God,
who delivered[ce] your enemies into your hand.”
Abram gave Melchizedek[cf] a tenth of everything.
21 Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and take the possessions for yourself.” 22 But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I raise my hand[cg] to the Lord, the Most High God, Creator of heaven and earth, and vow[ch] 23 that I will take nothing[ci] belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal. That way you can never say, ‘It is I[cj] who made Abram rich.’ 24 I will take nothing[ck] except compensation for what the young men have eaten.[cl] As for the share of the men who went with me—Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre—let them take their share.”
The Cutting of the Covenant
15 After these things the Lord’s message came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield[cm] and the one who will reward you in great abundance.”[cn]
2 But Abram said, “O Sovereign Lord,[co] what will you give me since[cp] I continue to be[cq] childless, and my heir[cr] is[cs] Eliezer of Damascus?”[ct] 3 Abram added,[cu] “Since[cv] you have not given me a descendant, then look, one born in my house will be my heir!”[cw]
4 But look,[cx] the Lord’s message came to him: “This man[cy] will not be your heir, but instead[cz] a son[da] who comes from your own body will be your heir.” 5 The Lord[db] took him outside and said, “Gaze into the sky and count the stars—if you are able to count them!” Then he said to him, “So will your descendants be.”
6 Abram believed[dc] the Lord, and the Lord[dd] credited[de] it[df] as righteousness[dg] to him.
7 The Lord said[dh] to him, “I am the Lord[di] who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans[dj] to give you this land to possess.” 8 But[dk] Abram[dl] said, “O Sovereign Lord,[dm] by what[dn] can I know that I am to possess it?”
9 The Lord[do] said to him, “Take for me a heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.” 10 So Abram[dp] took all these for him and then cut them in two[dq] and placed each half opposite the other,[dr] but he did not cut the birds in half. 11 When birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12 When the sun went down, Abram fell sound asleep,[ds] and great terror overwhelmed him.[dt] 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain[du] that your descendants will be strangers[dv] in a foreign country.[dw] They will be enslaved and oppressed[dx] for 400 years. 14 But I will execute judgment on the nation that they will serve.[dy] Afterward they will come out with many possessions. 15 But as for you,[dz] you will go to your ancestors[ea] in peace and be buried at a good old age.[eb] 16 In the fourth generation[ec] your descendants[ed] will return here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its limit.”[ee]
17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking firepot with a flaming torch[ef] passed between the animal parts.[eg] 18 That day the Lord made a covenant[eh] with Abram: “To your descendants I give[ei] this land, from the river of Egypt[ej] to the great river, the Euphrates River— 19 the land[ek] of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Jebusites.”[el]
Adultery
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’[a] 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell.[b] 30 If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell.
Divorce
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a legal document.’[c] 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality,[d] makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Oaths
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to an older generation,[e] ‘Do not break an oath, but fulfill your vows to the Lord.’[f] 34 But I say to you, do not take oaths at all—not by heaven, because it is the throne of God, 35 not by earth, because it is his footstool, and not by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.[g] 36 Do not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. 37 Let your word be ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no.’ More than this is from the evil one.[h]
Retaliation
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’[i] 39 But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer.[j] But whoever strikes you on the[k] right cheek, turn the other to him as well. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic,[l] let him have your coat also. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile,[m] go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you,[n] and do not reject[o] the one who wants to borrow from you.
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’[p] and ‘hate your enemy.’[q] 44 But I say to you, love your enemy and[r] pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be like[s] your Father in heaven, since he causes the sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Even the tax collectors[t] do the same, don’t they? 47 And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do? Even the Gentiles do the same, don’t they? 48 So then, be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.[u]

6 Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger.
Do not discipline me in your raging fury.[c]
2 Have mercy on me,[d] Lord, for I am frail.
Heal me, Lord, for my bones are shaking.[e]
3 I am absolutely terrified,[f]
and you, Lord—how long will this continue?[g]
4 Relent, Lord, rescue me![h]
Deliver me because of your faithfulness.[i]

All my enemies will turn back and be suddenly humiliated.
29 Because[a] they hated moral knowledge,[b]
and did not choose to fear the Lord,[c]
30 they did not comply with my advice,
they spurned[d] all my rebuke.
31 Therefore[e] they will eat from the fruit[f] of their way,[g]
and they will be stuffed full[h] of their own counsel.
32 For the waywardness[i] of the
simpletons will kill[j] them,
and the careless ease[k] of fools will destroy them.
33 But the one who listens[l] to me will live in security,[m]
and will be at ease[n] from the dread of harm.”
