New English Translation (NET)
Version
Leviticus 16:29-18:30

Review of the Day of Atonement

29 “This is to be a perpetual statute for you.[a] In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you must humble yourselves[b] and do no work of any kind,[c] both the native citizen and the resident foreigner who lives[d] in your midst, 30 for on this day atonement is to be made for you to cleanse you from all your sins; you must be clean before the Lord.[e] 31 It is to be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must humble yourselves.[f] It is a perpetual statute.[g]

32 “The priest who is anointed and ordained to act as high priest in place of his father[h] is to make atonement. He is to put on the linen garments, the holy garments, 33 and he is to purify[i] the Most Holy Place,[j] he is to purify the Meeting Tent and the altar,[k] and he is to make atonement for[l] the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 This is to be a perpetual statute for you[m] to make atonement for the Israelites for[n] all their sins once a year.”[o] So he did just as the Lord had commanded Moses.[p]

The Slaughter of Animals

17 The Lord spoke to Moses, “Speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites, and tell them, ‘This is the word that the Lord has commanded, “Blood guilt[q] will be accounted to any man[r] from the house of Israel[s] who slaughters an ox or a lamb or a goat inside the camp or outside the camp,[t] but has not brought it to the entrance of the Meeting Tent[u] to present it as[v] an offering to the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord. He has shed blood, so that man will be cut off from the midst of his people.[w] This is so that[x] the Israelites will bring their sacrifices that they are sacrificing in the open field[y] to the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent—to the priest—and sacrifice them there as peace-offering sacrifices to the Lord. The priest is to splash[z] the blood on the altar[aa] of the Lord at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, and offer the fat up in smoke for a soothing aroma to the Lord. So the people[ab] must no longer offer[ac] their sacrifices to the goat demons,[ad] acting like prostitutes by going after them.[ae] This is to be a perpetual statute for them throughout their generations.”’[af]

“You are to say to them: ‘Any man[ag] from the house of Israel or[ah] from the resident foreigners who live[ai] in their[aj] midst, who offers[ak] a burnt offering or a sacrifice but does not bring it to the entrance of the Meeting Tent to offer it[al] to the Lord—that person will be cut off from his people.[am]

Prohibition against Eating Blood

10 “‘Any man[an] from the house of Israel or from the resident foreigners who live[ao] in their[ap] midst who eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats the blood, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people,[aq] 11 for the life of every living thing[ar] is in the blood.[as] So I myself have assigned it to you[at] on the altar to make atonement for your lives, for the blood makes atonement by means of the life.[au] 12 Therefore, I have said to the Israelites: No person among you is to eat blood,[av] and no resident foreigner[aw] who lives among you is to eat blood.

13 “‘Any man from the Israelites[ax] or from the resident foreigners[ay] who live in their[az] midst who hunts a wild animal[ba] or a bird that may be eaten[bb] must pour out its blood and cover it with soil, 14 for the life of all flesh is its blood.[bc] So I have said to the Israelites: You must not eat the blood of any living thing[bd] because the life of every living thing is its blood—all who eat it will be cut off.[be]

Regulations for Eating Carcasses

15 “‘Any person[bf] who eats an animal that has died of natural causes[bg] or an animal torn by beasts, whether a native citizen or a resident foreigner,[bh] must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until evening; then he will be clean. 16 But if he does not wash his clothes[bi] and does not bathe his body, he will bear his punishment for his iniquity.’”[bj]

Exhortation to Obedience and Life

18 The Lord spoke to Moses: “Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘I am the Lord your God! You must not do as they do in the land of Egypt where you have been living,[bk] and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan into which I am about to bring you;[bl] you must not[bm] walk in their statutes. You must observe my regulations[bn] and you must be sure to walk in my statutes.[bo] I am the Lord your God. So you must keep[bp] my statutes and my regulations; anyone who does so will live by keeping them.[bq] I am the Lord.

Laws of Sexual Relations

“‘No man is to approach any close relative[br] to have sexual relations with her.[bs] I am the Lord.[bt] You must not[bu] expose your father’s nakedness by having sexual relations with your mother.[bv] She is your mother; you must not have sexual relations with her. You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; she is your father’s nakedness.[bw] You must not have sexual relations with your sister, whether she is your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter,[bx] whether she is born in the same household or born outside it;[by] you must not have sexual relations with either of them.[bz] 10 You must not expose the nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter by having sexual relations with them, because they are your own nakedness.[ca] 11 You must not have sexual relations with the daughter of your father’s wife born of your father; she is your sister. You must not have sexual relations with her.[cb] 12 You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister; she is your father’s flesh.[cc] 13 You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s flesh. 14 You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s brother; you must not approach his wife to have marital relations with her.[cd] She is your aunt.[ce] 15 You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife. You must not have sexual relations with her. 16 You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife; she is your brother’s nakedness.[cf] 17 You must not have sexual relations with both a woman and her daughter; you must not take as wife either her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter to have sexual relations with them.[cg] They are closely related to her[ch]—it is lewdness.[ci] 18 You must not take a woman in marriage and then marry her sister as a rival wife[cj] while she is still alive,[ck] to have sexual relations with her.

19 “‘You must not approach a woman in her menstrual impurity[cl] to have sexual relations with her. 20 You must not have sexual relations[cm] with the wife of your fellow citizen to become unclean with her. 21 You must not give any of your children as an offering to Molech,[cn] so that you do not profane[co] the name of your God. I am the Lord! 22 You must not have sexual relations with a male as one has sexual relations with a woman;[cp] it is a detestable act.[cq] 23 You must not have sexual relations[cr] with any animal to become defiled with it, and a woman must not stand before an animal to have sexual relations with it;[cs] it is a perversion.[ct]

Warning against the Abominations of the Nations

24 “‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things, for the nations that I am about to drive out before you[cu] have been defiled with all these things. 25 Therefore[cv] the land has become unclean and I have brought the punishment for its iniquity upon it,[cw] so that the land has vomited out its inhabitants. 26 You yourselves must obey[cx] my statutes and my regulations and must not do any of these abominations, both the native citizen and the resident foreigner[cy] in your midst, 27 for the people who were in the land before you have done all these abominations,[cz] and the land has become unclean. 28 So do not make the land vomit you out because you defile it[da] just as it has vomited out the nations[db] that were before you. 29 For if anyone does any of these abominations, that person who does them will be cut off from the midst of the people.[dc] 30 You must obey my charge not to practice any of the abominable statutes[dd] that have been done before you, so that you do not[de] defile yourselves by them. I am the Lord your God.’”

Mark 7:24-8:10

A Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith

24 After Jesus[a] left there, he went to the region of Tyre.[b] When he went into a house, he did not want anyone to know, but[c] he was not able to escape notice. 25 Instead, a woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit[d] immediately heard about him and came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, of Syrophoenician origin. She[e] asked him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 He said to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and to throw it to the dogs.”[f] 28 She answered, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” 29 Then[g] he said to her, “Because you said this, you may go. The demon has left your daughter.” 30 She went home and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Healing a Deaf Mute

31 Then[h] Jesus[i] went out again from the region of Tyre and came through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee in the region of the Decapolis.[j] 32 They brought to him a deaf man who had difficulty speaking, and they asked him to place his hands on him. 33 After Jesus[k] took him aside privately, away from the crowd, he put his fingers in the man’s[l] ears, and after spitting, he touched his tongue.[m] 34 Then[n] he looked up to heaven and said with a sigh, “Ephphatha” (that is, “Be opened”).[o] 35 And immediately the man’s[p] ears were opened, his tongue loosened, and he spoke plainly. 36 Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone. But as much as he ordered them not to do this, they proclaimed it all the more.[q] 37 People were completely astounded and said, “He has done everything well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

The Feeding of the Four Thousand

In those days there was another large crowd with nothing to eat. So[r] Jesus[s] called his disciples and said to them, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days, and they have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they will faint on the way, and some of them have come from a great distance.” His disciples answered him, “Where can someone get enough bread in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They replied, “Seven.” Then[t] he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. After he took the seven loaves and gave thanks, he broke them and began giving them to the disciples to serve. So[u] they served the crowd. They also had a few small fish. After giving thanks for these, he told them to serve these as well. Everyone[v] ate and was satisfied, and they picked up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. There were about 4,000[w] who ate.[x] Then he dismissed them.[y] 10 Immediately he got into a boat[z] with his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.[aa]

Psalm 41

Psalm 41[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David.

41 How blessed[b] is the one who treats the poor properly.[c]
When trouble comes,[d] may[e] the Lord deliver him.[f]
May the Lord protect him and save his life.[g]
May he be blessed[h] in the land.
Do not turn him over[i] to his enemies.[j]
The Lord supports[k] him on his sickbed;
you have healed him from his illness.[l]
As for me, I said:[m]
“O Lord, have mercy on me!
Heal me, for I have sinned against you.
My enemies ask this cruel question about me,[n]
‘When will he finally die and be forgotten?’[o]
When someone comes to visit,[p] he pretends to be friendly;[q]
he thinks of ways to defame me,[r]
and when he leaves he slanders me.[s]
All who hate me whisper insults about me to one another;[t]
they plan ways to harm me.
They say,[u]
‘An awful disease[v] overwhelms him,[w]
and now that he is bedridden he will never recover.’[x]
Even my close friend[y] whom I trusted,
he who shared meals with me, has turned against me.[z]
10 As for you, O Lord, have mercy on me and raise me up,
so I can pay them back!”[aa]
11 By this[ab] I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does[ac] not triumph[ad] over me.
12 As for me, you uphold[ae] me because of my integrity;[af]
you allow[ag] me permanent access to your presence.[ah]
13 The Lord God of Israel deserves praise[ai]
in the future and forevermore.[aj]
We agree! We agree![ak]

Proverbs 10:15-16

15 The wealth of a rich person is like[a] a fortified city,[b]
but the poor are brought to ruin[c] by[d] their poverty.
16 The reward[e] that the righteous receive[f] is life;
the recompense[g] that the wicked receive[h] is judgment.[i]
