New English Translation (NET)
Version
Leviticus 9:7-10:20

Moses then said to Aaron, “Approach the altar and make your sin offering and your burnt offering, and make atonement on behalf of yourself and on behalf of the people;[a] and also make the people’s offering and make atonement on behalf of them just as the Lord has commanded.”

The Sin Offering for the Priests

So Aaron approached the altar and slaughtered the sin offering calf which was for himself. Then Aaron’s sons presented the blood to him and he dipped his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar, and the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar. 10 The fat and the kidneys and the protruding lobe of[b] the liver from the sin offering he offered up in smoke on the altar just as the Lord had commanded Moses, 11 but the flesh and the hide he completely burned up[c] outside the camp.[d]

The Burnt Offering for the Priests

12 He then slaughtered the burnt offering, and his sons[e] handed[f] the blood to him and he splashed[g] it against the altar’s sides. 13 The burnt offering itself they handed[h] to him by its parts, including the head,[i] and he offered them up in smoke on the altar, 14 and he washed the entrails and the legs and offered them up in smoke on top of the burnt offering on the altar.

The Offerings for the People

15 Then he presented the people’s offering. He took the sin offering male goat which was for the people, slaughtered it, and performed a purification rite with it[j] like the first one.[k] 16 He then presented the burnt offering, and did it according to the standard regulation.[l] 17 Next he presented the grain offering, filled his hand with some of it, and offered it up in smoke on the altar in addition to the morning burnt offering.[m] 18 Then he slaughtered the ox and the ram—the peace-offering sacrifices which were for the people—and Aaron’s sons handed[n] the blood to him and he splashed it against the altar’s sides. 19 As for the fat parts from the ox and from the ram[o] (the fatty tail, the fat covering the entrails,[p] the kidneys, and the protruding lobe of the liver), 20 they[q] set those on the breasts and he offered the fat parts up in smoke on the altar. 21 Finally Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh as a wave offering before the Lord just as Moses had commanded.

22 Then Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them and descended from making the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offering. 23 Moses and Aaron then entered into the Meeting Tent. When they came out, they blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 Then fire went out from the presence of the Lord[r] and consumed the burnt offering and the fat parts on the altar, and all the people saw it, so they shouted loudly and fell down with their faces to the ground.[s]

Nadab and Abihu

10 Then[t] Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu, each took his fire pan and put fire in it, set incense on it, and presented strange fire[u] before the Lord, which he had not commanded them to do. So fire went out from the presence of the Lord[v] and consumed them so that they died before the Lord. Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke: ‘Among the ones close to me I will show myself holy,[w] and in the presence of all the people I will be honored.’”[x] So Aaron kept silent. Moses then called to Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel, Aaron’s uncle, and said to them, “Come near, carry your brothers from the front of the sanctuary to a place outside the camp.” So they came near and carried them away in their tunics to a place outside the camp just as Moses had spoken. Then Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar his other two sons, “Do not[y] dishevel the hair of your heads[z] and do not tear your garments, so that you do not die and so that wrath does not come on the whole congregation. Your brothers, all the house of Israel, are to mourn the burning that the Lord has caused,[aa] but you must not go out from the entrance of the Meeting Tent lest you die, for the Lord’s anointing oil is on you.” So they acted according to the word of Moses.

Perpetual Statutes the Lord Spoke to Aaron

Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, “Do not drink wine or strong drink, you and your sons with you, when you enter into the Meeting Tent, so that you do not die. This is a perpetual statute throughout your generations,[ab] 10 as well as[ac] to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean,[ad] 11 and to teach the Israelites all the statutes that the Lord has spoken to them through[ae] Moses.”

Perpetual Statutes Moses spoke to Aaron

12 Then Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his remaining sons, “Take the grain offering which remains from the gifts of the Lord and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 You must eat it in a holy place because it is your allotted portion[af] and the allotted portion of your sons from the gifts[ag] of the Lord, for this is what I have been commanded.[ah] 14 Also, the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution offering you must eat in a ceremonially clean[ai] place, you and your sons and daughters with you, for the foods have been given as your allotted portion and the allotted portion of your sons from the peace-offering sacrifices of the Israelites.[aj] 15 The thigh of the contribution offering and the breast of the wave offering they must bring in addition to the gifts of the fat parts to wave them as a wave offering before the Lord, and it will belong to you and your sons with you for a perpetual statute just as the Lord has commanded.”

The Problem with the Inaugural Sin Offering

16 Later Moses sought diligently for the sin offering male goat,[ak] but it had actually been burnt.[al] So he became angry at Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, saying, 17 “Why did you not eat the sin offering in the sanctuary? For it is most holy and he gave it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation,[am] to make atonement on their behalf before the Lord. 18 See here![an] Its blood was not brought into the Holy Place within![ao] You should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary just as I commanded!” 19 But Aaron spoke to Moses, “See here![ap] Just today they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord and such things as these have happened to me! If I had eaten a sin offering today would the Lord have been pleased?”[aq] 20 When Moses heard this explanation, he was satisfied.[ar]

Mark 4:26-5:20

The Parable of the Growing Seed

26 He also said, “The kingdom of God[a] is like someone who spreads seed on the ground. 27 He goes to sleep and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 By itself the soil produces a crop, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain[b] in the head. 29 And when the grain is ripe, he sends in the sickle[c] because the harvest has come.”[d]

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

30 He also asked, “To what can we compare the kingdom of God,[e] or what parable can we use to present it? 31 It is like a mustard seed[f] that when sown in the ground, even though it is the smallest of all the seeds in the ground— 32 when it is sown, it grows up,[g] becomes the greatest of all garden plants, and grows large branches so that the wild birds[h] can nest in its shade.”[i]

The Use of Parables

33 So[j] with many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear. 34 He did not speak to them without a parable. But privately he explained everything to his own disciples.

Stilling of a Storm

35 On that day, when evening came, Jesus[k] said to his disciples, “Let’s go across to the other side of the lake.”[l] 36 So[m] after leaving the crowd, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat,[n] and other boats were with him. 37 Now[o] a great windstorm[p] developed and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was nearly swamped. 38 But[q] he was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. They woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are about to die?” 39 So[r] he got up and rebuked[s] the wind, and said to the sea,[t] “Be quiet! Calm down!” Then[u] the wind stopped, and it was dead calm. 40 And he said to them, “Why are you cowardly? Do you still not have faith?” 41 They were overwhelmed by fear and said to one another, “Who then is this?[v] Even the wind and sea obey him!”[w]

Healing of a Demoniac

So[x] they came to the other side of the lake, to the region of the Gerasenes.[y] Just as Jesus[z] was getting out of the boat,[aa] a man with an unclean spirit[ab] came from the tombs and met him.[ac] He lived among the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For his hands and feet had often been bound with chains and shackles,[ad] but[ae] he had torn the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Each night and every day among the tombs and in the mountains, he would cry out and cut himself with stones. When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and bowed down before him. Then[af] he cried out with a loud voice, “Leave me alone,[ag] Jesus, Son of the Most High God! I implore you by God[ah]—do not torment me!” (For Jesus[ai] had said to him, “Come out of that man, you unclean spirit!”)[aj] Jesus[ak] asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “My name is Legion,[al] for we are many.” 10 He begged Jesus[am] repeatedly not to send them out of the region. 11 There on the hillside,[an] a great herd of pigs was feeding. 12 And the demonic spirits[ao] begged him, “Send us into the pigs. Let us enter them.” 13 Jesus[ap] gave them permission.[aq] So[ar] the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs. Then the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake, and about 2,000 were drowned in the lake.

14 Now[as] the herdsmen ran off and spread the news in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting there, clothed and in his right mind—the one who had the “Legion”—and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen what had happened to the demon-possessed man reported it, and they also told about the pigs. 17 Then[at] they began to beg Jesus[au] to leave their region. 18 As he was getting into the boat the man who had been demon-possessed asked if he could go[av] with him. 19 But[aw] Jesus[ax] did not permit him to do so. Instead, he said to him, “Go to your home and to your people and tell them what the Lord has done for you,[ay] that he had mercy on you.” 20 So[az] he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis[ba] what Jesus had done for him,[bb] and all were amazed.

Psalm 37:30-40

30 The godly speak wise words
and promote justice.[a]
31 The law of their God controls their thinking;[b]
their[c] feet do not slip.
32 The wicked set an ambush for the godly
and try to kill them.[d]
33 But the Lord does not surrender the godly,
or allow them to be condemned in a court of law.[e]
34 Rely[f] on the Lord. Obey his commands.[g]
Then he will permit you[h] to possess the land;
you will see the demise of the wicked.[i]
35 I have seen ruthless, wicked people[j]
growing in influence, like a green tree grows in its native soil.[k]
36 But then one passes by, and suddenly they have disappeared.[l]
I looked for them, but they could not be found.
37 Take note of the one who has integrity. Observe the upright.
For the one who promotes peace has a future.[m]
38 Sinful rebels are totally destroyed;[n]
the wicked have no future.[o]
39 But the Lord delivers the godly;[p]
he protects them in times of trouble.[q]
40 The Lord helps them and rescues them;
he rescues them from the wicked and delivers them,[r]
for they seek his protection.

Proverbs 10:6-7

Blessings[a] are on the head of the righteous,
but the speech[b] of the wicked conceals[c] violence.[d]
The memory[e] of the righteous is a blessing,
but the reputation[f] of the wicked will rot.[g]
