New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE)
Version
Isaiah 30:12-33:9

12 Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel:
Because you reject this word
    and put your trust in oppression and deceit
    and rely on them,(A)
13 therefore this iniquity shall become for you
    like a break in a high wall, bulging out and about to collapse,
    whose crash comes suddenly, in an instant;(B)
14 its breaking is like that of a potter’s vessel
    that is smashed so ruthlessly
that among its fragments not a sherd is found
    for taking fire from the hearth
    or dipping water out of the cistern.(C)

15 For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel:
In returning and rest you shall be saved;
    in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.
But you refused(D) 16 and said,
‘No! We will flee upon horses’—
    therefore you shall flee!
and, ‘We will ride upon swift steeds’—
    therefore your pursuers shall be swift!(E)
17 A thousand shall flee at the threat of one;
    at the threat of five you shall flee
until you are left
    like a flagstaff on the top of a mountain,
    like a signal on a hill.(F)

God’s Promise to Zion

18 Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you;
    therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
    blessed are all those who wait for him.(G)

19 O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you.(H) 20 Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any longer, but your eyes shall see your Teacher.(I) 21 And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”(J) 22 Then you will defile your silver-covered idols and your gold-plated images. You will scatter them like impure things; you will say to them, “Away with you!”(K)

23 He will give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and grain, the produce of the ground, will be rich and plenteous. On that day your cattle will graze in broad pastures,(L) 24 and the oxen and donkeys that till the ground will eat silage that has been winnowed with shovel and fork. 25 On every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water—on a day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. 26 Moreover, the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, like the light of seven days, on the day when the Lord binds up the injuries of his people and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.(M)

Judgment on Assyria

27 See, the name of the Lord comes from far away,
    his anger burning and his burden heavy;[a]
his lips are full of indignation,
    and his tongue is like a devouring fire;(N)
28 his breath is like an overflowing stream
    that reaches up to the neck—
to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction
    and to place on the jaws of the peoples a bridle that leads them astray.(O)

29 You shall have a song as in the night when a holy festival is kept and gladness of heart, as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.(P) 30 And the Lord will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst and tempest and hailstones.(Q) 31 The Assyrian will be terror-stricken at the voice of the Lord when he strikes with his rod.(R) 32 And every stroke of the staff of punishment[b] that the Lord lays upon him will be to the sound of timbrels and lyres with dancing;[c] with brandished arm he will fight with him.(S) 33 For his burning place[d] has long been prepared, also for the king;[e] its pyre is made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.(T)

Alliance with Egypt Is Futile

31 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help
    and who rely on horses,
who trust in chariots because they are many
    and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but do not look to the Holy One of Israel
    or consult the Lord!(U)
Yet he is wise and can bring disaster;
    he does not depart from his words
but will rise against the house of the evildoers
    and against the helpers of those who work iniquity.(V)
The Egyptians are human and not God;
    their horses are flesh and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out his hand,
    the helper will stumble, and the one helped will fall,
    and they will all perish together.(W)

For thus the Lord said to me,
“As a lion or a young lion growls over its prey
    and, when a band of shepherds is called out against it,
is not terrified by their shouting
    or daunted at their noise,
so the Lord of hosts will come down
    to fight upon Mount Zion and upon its hill.(X)
Like birds hovering overhead, so the Lord of hosts
    will protect Jerusalem;
he will protect and deliver it;
    he will spare and rescue it.”(Y)

Turn back to him whom you[f] have deeply betrayed, O people of Israel.(Z) For on that day all of you shall throw away your idols of silver and idols of gold, which your hands have sinfully made for you.(AA)

“Then the Assyrian shall fall by a sword not of mortals,
    and a sword not of humans shall devour him;
he shall flee from the sword,
    and his young men shall be put to forced labor.(AB)
His rock shall pass away in terror,
    and his officers desert the standard in panic,”
says the Lord, whose fire is in Zion
    and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.(AC)

Government with Justice Predicted

32 See, a king will reign in righteousness,
    and princes[g] will rule with justice.(AD)
Each will be like a hiding place from the wind,
    a covert from the tempest,
like streams of water in a dry place,
    like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.(AE)
Then the eyes of those who have sight will not be closed,
    and the ears of those who have hearing will listen.(AF)
The minds of the rash will have good judgment,
    and the tongues of stammerers will speak readily and distinctly.(AG)
A fool will no longer be called noble
    nor a villain said to be honorable.(AH)
For fools speak folly,
    and their minds plot iniquity:
to practice ungodliness,
    to utter error concerning the Lord,
to leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied,
    and to deprive the thirsty of drink.(AI)
The villainies of villains are evil;
    they devise wicked devices
to ruin the poor with lying words,
    even when the plea of the needy is right.(AJ)
But those who are noble plan noble things,
    and by noble things they stand.(AK)

Complacent Women Warned of Disaster

Rise up, you women who are at ease, hear my voice;
    you complacent daughters, listen to my speech.(AL)
10 In little more than a year
    you will shudder, you complacent ones,
for the vintage will fail;
    the fruit harvest will not come.(AM)
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease;
    shudder, you complacent ones;
strip and make yourselves bare,
    and put sackcloth on your loins.(AN)
12 Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields,[h]
    for the fruitful vine,(AO)
13 for the soil of my people
    growing up in thorns and briers,
yes, for all the joyous houses
    in the jubilant city.(AP)
14 For the palace will be forsaken,
    the populous city deserted;
the hill and the watchtower
    will become dens forever,
the joy of wild asses,
    a pasture for flocks;(AQ)
15 until a spirit from on high is poured out on us,
    and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field,
    and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.(AR)

The Peace of God’s Reign

16 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness
    and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.(AS)
17 The effect of righteousness will be peace,
    and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.(AT)
18 My people will abide in a peaceful habitation,
    in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.
19 The forest will disappear completely,[i]
    and the city will be utterly laid low.(AU)
20 Happy will you be who sow beside every stream,
    who let the ox and the donkey range freely.(AV)

A Prophecy of Deliverance from Foes

33 Woe to the destroyer,
    who yourself have not been destroyed;
you treacherous one,
    with whom no one has dealt treacherously!
When you have ceased to destroy,
    you will be destroyed;
and when you have stopped dealing treacherously,
    you will be dealt with treacherously.(AW)

O Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for you.
    Be our arm every morning,
    our salvation in the time of trouble.(AX)
At the sound of tumult, peoples fled;
    before your majesty, nations scattered.(AY)
Spoil was gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
    as locusts leap, they leaped[j] upon it.
The Lord is exalted; he dwells on high;
    he filled Zion with justice and righteousness;(AZ)
he will be the stability of your times,
    abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;
    the fear of the Lord is Zion’s treasure.[k](BA)

Listen! The people of Ariel[l] cry out in the streets;
    the envoys of peace weep bitterly.(BB)
The highways are deserted;
    travelers have quit the road.
The treaty is broken;
    its oaths[m] are despised,
    the people are disregarded.
The land mourns and languishes;
    Lebanon is confounded and withers away;
Sharon is like a desert,
    and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

Galatians 5:1-12

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.(A)

The Nature of Christian Freedom

Listen! I, Paul, am telling you that, if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Once again I testify to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obliged to obey the entire law. You who want to be reckoned as righteous[a] by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.(B) For through the Spirit, by faith, we eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.(C) For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything; the only thing that counts is faith working[b] through love.(D)

You were running well; who prevented you from obeying the truth?(E) Such persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. A little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough. 10 I am confident about you in the Lord that you will not think otherwise. But whoever it is that is confusing you will pay the penalty.(F) 11 But my brothers and sisters, why am I still being persecuted if I am still preaching circumcision? In that case the offense of the cross has been removed. 12 I wish those who unsettle you would castrate themselves!

Psalm 63

Psalm 63

Comfort and Assurance in God’s Presence

A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness of Judah.

O God, you are my God; I seek you;
    my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
    as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.(A)
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
    beholding your power and glory.(B)
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
    my lips will praise you.(C)
So I will bless you as long as I live;
    I will lift up my hands and call on your name.(D)

My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast,[a]
    and my mouth praises you with joyful lips(E)
when I think of you on my bed
    and meditate on you in the watches of the night,(F)
for you have been my help,
    and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.(G)
My soul clings to you;
    your right hand upholds me.(H)

But those who seek to destroy my life
    shall go down into the depths of the earth;(I)
10 they shall be given over to the power of the sword;
    they shall be prey for jackals.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who swear by him shall exult,
    for the mouths of liars will be stopped.(J)

Proverbs 23:22

22 Listen to your father who begot you,
    and do not despise your mother when she is old.(A)
