New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE)
Version
Isaiah 28:14-30:11

14 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers
    who rule this people in Jerusalem.(A)
15 Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death,
    and with Sheol we have an agreement;
when the overwhelming scourge passes through
    it will not come to us,
for we have made lies our refuge,
    and in falsehood we have taken shelter”;(B)
16 therefore thus says the Lord God,
“See, I am laying[a] in Zion a foundation stone,
    a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation:
    ‘One who trusts will not panic.’(C)
17 And I will make justice the line
    and righteousness the plummet;
hail will sweep away the refuge of lies,
    and waters will overwhelm the shelter.(D)
18 Then your covenant with death will be annulled,
    and your agreement with Sheol will not stand;
when the overwhelming scourge passes through,
    you will be beaten down by it.(E)
19 As often as it passes through, it will take you,
    for morning by morning it will pass through,
    by day and by night,
and it will be sheer terror to understand the message.”(F)
20 For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on it,
    and the covering is too narrow to wrap oneself in it.
21 For the Lord will rise up as on Mount Perazim;
    he will rage as in the valley of Gibeon
to do his deed—strange is his deed!—
    and to work his work—alien is his work!(G)
22 Now therefore do not scoff,
    or your bonds will be made stronger,
for I have heard a decree of destruction
    from the Lord God of hosts upon the whole land.(H)

23 Listen and hear my voice;
    Pay attention and hear my speech.
24 Do those who plow for sowing plow continually?
    Do they continually open and harrow their ground?
25 When they have leveled its surface,
    do they not scatter dill, sow cumin,
and plant wheat in rows
    and barley in its proper place[b]
    and spelt as the border?
26 For they are well instructed;
    their God teaches them.

27 For dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge,
    nor is a cart wheel rolled over cumin,
but dill is beaten out with a stick
    and cumin with a rod.(I)
28 Grain is crushed for bread,
    but one does not thresh it forever;
one drives the cart wheel and horses over it
    but does not pulverize it.
29 This also comes from the Lord of hosts;
    he is wonderful in counsel
    and excellent in wisdom.(J)

The Siege of Jerusalem

29 Woe to Ariel, Ariel,
    the city where David encamped!
Add year to year;
    let the festivals run their round.(K)
Yet I will oppress Ariel,
    and there shall be moaning and lamentation,
    and you[c] shall be to me like an Ariel.[d](L)
And like David[e] I will encamp against you;
    I will besiege you with towers
    and raise siegeworks against you.(M)
Then deep from the earth you shall speak;
    from low in the dust your words shall come;
your voice shall come from the ground like the voice of a ghost,
    and your speech shall whisper out of the dust.(N)

But the multitude of your arrogant ones[f] shall be like fine dust
    and the multitude of tyrants like flying chaff.
And in an instant, suddenly,(O)
    you will be visited by the Lord of hosts
with thunder and earthquake and great noise,
    with whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a devouring fire.(P)
And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel,
    all that fight against her and her stronghold and who distress her,
    shall be like a dream, a vision of the night.(Q)
Just as when a hungry person dreams of eating
    and wakes up still hungry
or a thirsty person dreams of drinking
    and wakes up faint, still thirsty,
so shall the multitude of all the nations be
    that fight against Mount Zion.(R)

Be astounded and stunned;
    blind yourselves and be blind!
Be drunk but not from wine;
    stagger but not from strong drink!(S)
10 For the Lord has poured out upon you
    a spirit of deep sleep;
he has closed your eyes (the prophets)
    and covered your heads (the seers).(T)

11 The vision of all this has become for you like the words of a sealed document. If it is given to those who can read with the command, “Read this,” they say, “We cannot, for it is sealed.”(U) 12 And if it is given to those who cannot read, saying, “Read this,” they say, “We cannot read.”

13 The Lord said:
Because these people draw near with their mouths
    and honor me with their lips,
    while their hearts are far from me
and their worship of me is a human commandment learned by rote,(V)
14 so I will again do
    amazing things with this people,
    shocking and amazing.
The wisdom of their wise shall perish,
    and the discernment of the discerning shall be hidden.(W)

15 Woe to those who hide a plan too deep for the Lord,
    whose deeds are in the dark,
    and who say, “Who sees us? Who knows us?”(X)
16 You turn things upside down!
    Shall the potter be regarded as the clay?
Shall the thing made say of its maker,
    “He did not make me,”
or the thing formed say of the one who formed it,
    “He has no understanding”?(Y)

Hope for the Future

17 Shall not Lebanon in a very little while
    become a fruitful field
    and the fruitful field be regarded as a forest?(Z)
18 On that day the deaf shall hear
    the words of a scroll,
and freed from gloom and darkness
    the eyes of the blind shall see.(AA)
19 The meek shall obtain fresh joy in the Lord,
    and the neediest people shall exult in the Holy One of Israel.(AB)
20 For the tyrant shall be no more,
    and the scoffer shall cease to be;
    all those alert to do evil shall be cut off—(AC)
21 those who cause a person to lose a lawsuit,
    who set a trap for the arbiter in the gate
    and undermine justice for the one in the right.(AD)

22 Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:

“No longer shall Jacob be ashamed;
    no longer shall his face grow pale.(AE)
23 For when he sees his children,
    the work of my hands, in his midst,
    they will sanctify my name;
they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob
    and will stand in awe of the God of Israel.(AF)
24 And those who err in spirit will come to understanding,
    and those who grumble will accept instruction.”(AG)

The Futility of Reliance on Egypt

30 Woe to the rebellious children, says the Lord,
who carry out a plan but not mine;
who make an alliance but against my will,
    adding sin to sin;(AH)
who set out to go down to Egypt
    without asking for my counsel,
to take refuge in the protection of Pharaoh
    and to seek shelter in the shadow of Egypt.(AI)
Therefore the protection of Pharaoh shall become your shame,
    and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt your humiliation.(AJ)
For though his officials are at Zoan
    and his envoys reach Hanes,(AK)
everyone comes to shame
    through a people that cannot profit them,
that brings neither help nor profit,
    only shame and disgrace.(AL)

An oracle concerning the animals of the Negeb.

Through a land of trouble and distress,
    of lioness and roaring[g] lion,
    of viper and flying serpent,
they carry their riches on the backs of donkeys
    and their treasures on the humps of camels
    to a people that cannot profit them.(AM)
For Egypt’s help is worthless and empty;
    therefore I have called her,
    “Rahab who sits still.”[h](AN)

A Rebellious People

Go now, write it before them on a tablet,
    and inscribe it on a scroll,
so that it may be for the time to come
    as a witness forever.(AO)
For they are a rebellious people,
    faithless children,
children who will not hear
    the instruction of the Lord;(AP)
10 who say to the seers, “Do not see,”
    and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right;
speak to us smooth things;
    prophesy illusions;(AQ)
11 leave the way; turn aside from the path;
    let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.”(AR)

Galatians 3:23-4:31

23 Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be reckoned as righteous[a] by faith.(A) 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinarian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.(B) 27 As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.(C) 28 There is no longer Jew or Greek; there is no longer slave or free; there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.(D) 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring,[b] heirs according to the promise.(E)

My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than those who are enslaved, though they are the owners of all the property, but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental principles[c] of the world.(F) But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,(G) in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children.(H) And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our[d] hearts, crying, “Abba![e] Father!”(I) So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir through God.[f]

Paul Reproves the Galatians

Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods.(J) Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental principles?[g] How can you want to be enslaved to them again?(K) 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years. 11 I am afraid that my work for you may have been wasted.

12 Brothers and sisters, I beg you: become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong. 13 You know that it was because of a physical infirmity that I first announced the gospel to you; 14 though my condition put you to the test, you did not scorn or despise me but welcomed me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 What has become of the goodwill you felt? For I testify that, had it been possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They make much of you but for no good purpose; they want to exclude you, so that you may make much of them. 18 It is good to be made much of for a good purpose at all times and not only when I am present with you. 19 My little children, for whom I am again in the pain of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,(L) 20 I wish I were present with you now and could change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

The Allegory of Hagar and Sarah

21 Tell me, you who desire to be subject to the law, will you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by an enslaved woman and the other by a free woman.(M) 23 One, the child of the enslaved woman, was born according to the flesh; the other, the child of the free woman, was born through the promise.(N) 24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One woman, in fact, is Hagar, from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia[h] and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the other woman corresponds to the Jerusalem above; she is free, and she is our mother.(O) 27 For it is written,

“Rejoice, you childless one, you who bear no children,
    burst into song and shout, you who endure no birth pangs,
for the children of the desolate woman are more numerous
    than the children of the one who is married.”(P)

28 Now you,[i] my brothers and sisters, are children of the promise, like Isaac. 29 But just as at that time the child who was born according to the flesh persecuted the child who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also.(Q) 30 But what does the scripture say? “Drive out the enslaved woman and her child, for the child of the enslaved woman will not share the inheritance with the child of the free woman.”(R) 31 So then, brothers and sisters, we are children, not of an enslaved woman but of the free woman.

Psalm 62

Psalm 62

Song of Trust in God Alone

To the leader: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.(A)
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall never be shaken.(B)

How long will you assail a person,
    will you batter your victim, all of you,
    as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?(C)
Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.
    They take pleasure in falsehood;
they bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse. Selah(D)

For God alone my soul waits in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.(E)
On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.(F)

Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah(G)

Those of low estate are but a breath;
    those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.(H)
10 Put no confidence in extortion,
    and set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.(I)

11 Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,(J)
12     and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
    according to their work.(K)

Proverbs 23:19-21

19 Hear, my child, and be wise,
    and direct your mind in the way.
20 Do not be among winebibbers
    or among gluttonous eaters of meat,(A)
21 for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty,
    and drowsiness will clothe them with rags.(B)
