New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition (NRSVUE)
Version
Job 37-39

37 “At this also my heart trembles
    and leaps out of its place.
Listen, listen to the thunder of his voice
    and the rumbling that comes from his mouth.(A)
Under the whole heaven he lets it loose,
    and his lightning to the corners of the earth.
After it his voice roars;
    he thunders with his majestic voice,
    and he does not restrain the lightnings[a] when his voice is heard.(B)
God thunders wondrously with his voice;
    he does great things that we cannot comprehend.(C)
For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth’;
    and the shower of rain, his heavy shower of rain,(D)
serves as a sign on everyone’s hand,
    so that all whom he has made may know it.[b](E)
Then the animals go into their lairs
    and remain in their dens.(F)
From its chamber comes the whirlwind
    and cold from the scattering winds.(G)
10 By the breath of God ice is given,
    and the broad waters are frozen fast.(H)
11 He loads the thick cloud with moisture;
    the clouds scatter his lightning.(I)
12 They turn round and round by his guidance
    to accomplish all that he commands them
    on the face of the habitable world.(J)
13 Whether for correction or for his land
    or for love, he causes it to happen.(K)

14 “Hear this, O Job;
    stop and consider the wondrous works of God.(L)
15 Do you know how God lays his command upon them
    and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine?
16 Do you know the balancings of the clouds,
    the wondrous works of the one whose knowledge is perfect,(M)
17 you whose garments are hot
    when the earth is still because of the south wind?
18 Can you, like him, spread out the skies,
    hard as a molten mirror?(N)
19 Teach us what we shall say to him;
    we cannot draw up our case because of darkness.
20 Should he be told that I want to speak?
    Did anyone ever wish to be swallowed up?
21 Now, no one can look on the light
    when it is bright in the skies,
    when the wind has passed and cleared them.
22 Out of the north comes golden splendor;
    around God is awesome majesty.
23 The Almighty[c]—we cannot find him;
    he is great in power and justice,
    and abundant righteousness he will not violate.(O)
24 Therefore mortals fear him;
    he does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit.”(P)

The Lord Answers Job

38 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind:(Q)

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?(R)
Gird up your loins like a man;
    I will question you, and you shall declare to me.(S)

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
    Tell me, if you have understanding.(T)
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
    Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
    or who laid its cornerstone(U)
when the morning stars sang together
    and all the heavenly beings[d] shouted for joy?(V)

“Or who shut in the sea with doors
    when it burst out from the womb,(W)
when I made the clouds its garment
    and thick darkness its swaddling band,(X)
10 and prescribed bounds for it,
    and set bars and doors,(Y)
11 and said, ‘Thus far shall you come and no farther,
    and here shall your proud waves be stopped’?(Z)

12 “Have you commanded the morning since your days began
    and caused the dawn to know its place,(AA)
13 so that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth,
    and the wicked be shaken out of it?(AB)
14 It is changed like clay under the seal,
    and it is dyed[e] like a garment.
15 Light is withheld from the wicked,
    and their uplifted arm is broken.(AC)

16 “Have you entered into the springs of the sea
    or walked in the recesses of the deep?(AD)
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
    or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?(AE)
18 Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?
    Declare, if you know all this.(AF)

19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light,
    and where is the place of darkness,
20 that you may take it to its territory
    and that you may discern the paths to its home?(AG)
21 Surely you know, for you were born then,
    and the number of your days is great!(AH)

22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow,
    or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,(AI)
23 which I have reserved for the time of trouble,
    for the day of battle and war?(AJ)
24 What is the way to the place where the light is distributed
    or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth?(AK)

25 “Who has cut a channel for the torrents of rain
    and a way for the thunderbolt,(AL)
26 to bring rain on a land where no one lives,
    on the desert, which is empty of human life,(AM)
27 to satisfy the waste and desolate land,
    and to make the ground put forth grass?(AN)

28 “Has the rain a father,
    or who has fathered the drops of dew?(AO)
29 From whose womb did the ice come forth,
    and who has given birth to the hoarfrost of heaven?(AP)
30 The waters become hard like stone,
    and the face of the deep is frozen.

31 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades
    or loose the cords of Orion?(AQ)
32 Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season,
    or can you guide the Bear with its children?
33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?
    Can you establish their rule on the earth?(AR)

34 “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
    so that a flood of waters may cover you?(AS)
35 Can you send forth lightnings, so that they may go
    and say to you, ‘Here we are’?(AT)
36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts[f]
    or given understanding to the mind?[g](AU)
37 Who has the wisdom to number the clouds?
    Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens
38 when the dust runs into a mass
    and the clods cling together?

39 “Can you hunt the prey for the lion
    or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,(AV)
40 when they crouch in their dens
    or lie in wait in their covert?(AW)
41 Who provides for the raven its prey,
    when its young ones cry to God
    and wander about for lack of food?(AX)

39 “Do you know when the mountain goats give birth?
    Do you observe the calving of the deer?(AY)
Can you number the months that they fulfill,
    and do you know the time when they give birth,
when they crouch to give birth to their offspring
    and are delivered of their young?(AZ)
Their young ones become strong; they grow up in the open;
    they go forth and do not return to them.

“Who has let the wild ass go free?
    Who has loosed the bonds of the swift ass,(BA)
to which I have given the steppe for its home,
    the salt land for its dwelling place?(BB)
It scorns the tumult of the city;
    it does not hear the shouts of the driver.
It ranges the mountains as its pasture,
    and it searches after every green thing.

“Is the wild ox willing to serve you?
    Will it spend the night at your crib?(BC)
10 Can you tie it in the furrow with ropes,
    or will it harrow the valleys after you?
11 Will you depend on it because its strength is great,
    and will you hand over your labor to it?
12 Do you have faith in it that it will return
    and bring your grain to your threshing floor?[h]

13 “The ostrich’s wings flap wildly,
    though its pinions lack plumage.[i]
14 For it leaves its eggs to the earth
    and lets them be warmed on the ground,
15 forgetting that a foot may crush them
    and that a wild animal may trample them.
16 It deals cruelly with its young, as if they were not its own;
    though its labor should be in vain, yet it has no fear;(BD)
17 because God has made it forget wisdom
    and given it no share in understanding.(BE)
18 When it spreads its plumes aloft,[j]
    it laughs at the horse and its rider.

19 “Do you give the horse its might?
    Do you clothe its neck with mane?(BF)
20 Do you make it leap like the locust?
    Its majestic snorting is terrible.(BG)
21 It paws[k] violently, exults mightily;
    it goes out to meet the weapons.(BH)
22 It laughs at fear and is not dismayed;
    it does not turn back from the sword.
23 Upon it rattle the quiver,
    the flashing spear, and the javelin.
24 With fierceness and rage it swallows the ground;
    it cannot stand still at the sound of the trumpet.(BI)
25 When the trumpet sounds, it says ‘Aha!’
    From a distance it smells the battle,
    the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.(BJ)

26 “Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars
    and spreads its wings toward the south?
27 Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up
    and makes its nest on high?(BK)
28 It lives on the rock and makes its home
    in the fastness of the rocky crag.
29 From there it spies the prey;
    its eyes see it from far away.(BL)
30 Its young ones suck up blood,
    and where the slain are, there it is.”(BM)

2 Corinthians 4:13-5:10

13 But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—“I believed, and so I spoke”—we also believe, and therefore we also speak,(A) 14 because we know that the one who raised Jesus[a] will also raise us with Jesus and will present us with you in his presence.(B) 15 Indeed, everything is for your sake, so that grace, when it has extended to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Living by Faith

16 So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.(C) 17 For our slight, momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure,(D) 18 because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen, for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.(E)

For we know that, if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.(F) For in this tent we groan, longing to be further clothed with our heavenly dwelling, for surely when we have been clothed in it[b] we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan under our burden because we wish not to be unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.(G) The one who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a down payment.(H)

So we are always confident, even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight.(I) Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to be pleasing to him. 10 For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive due recompense for actions done in the body, whether good or evil.(J)

Psalm 44:9-26

Yet you have rejected us and shamed us
    and have not gone out with our armies.(A)
10 You made us turn back from the foe,
    and our enemies have gotten spoil.(B)
11 You have made us like sheep for slaughter
    and have scattered us among the nations.(C)
12 You have sold your people for a trifle,
    demanding no high price for them.(D)

13 You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,
    the derision and scorn of those around us.(E)
14 You have made us a byword among the nations,
    a laughingstock[a] among the peoples.(F)
15 All day long my disgrace is before me,
    and shame has covered my face
16 at the words of the taunters and revilers,
    at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.(G)

17 All this has come upon us,
    yet we have not forgotten you
    or been false to your covenant.(H)
18 Our heart has not turned back,
    nor have our steps departed from your way,(I)
19 yet you have broken us in the haunt of jackals
    and covered us with deep darkness.(J)

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a strange god,(K)
21 would not God discover this?
    For he knows the secrets of the heart.(L)
22 Because of you we are being killed all day long
    and accounted as sheep for the slaughter.(M)

23 Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O Lord?
    Awake, do not cast us off forever!(N)
24 Why do you hide your face?
    Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?(O)
25 For we sink down to the dust;
    our bodies cling to the ground.(P)
26 Rise up, come to our help.
    Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love.(Q)

Proverbs 22:13

13 The lazy person says, “There is a lion outside!
    I shall be killed in the streets!”(A)
