Version
Leviticus 7:28-9:6

28 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 29 “Speak to the Israelites: Any one of you who would offer to the Lord your sacrifice of well-being must yourself bring to the Lord your offering from your sacrifice of well-being.(A) 30 Your own hands shall bring the Lord’s offering by fire;[a] you shall bring the fat with the breast, so that the breast may be raised as an elevation offering before the Lord. 31 The priest shall turn the fat into smoke on the altar, but the breast shall belong to Aaron and his sons.(B) 32 And the right thigh from your sacrifices of well-being you shall give to the priest as an offering; 33 the one among the sons of Aaron who offers the blood and fat of the offering of well-being shall have the right thigh for a portion. 34 For I have taken the breast of the elevation offering and the thigh that is offered from the Israelites, from their sacrifices of well-being, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons, as a perpetual due from the Israelites.(C) 35 This is the portion allotted to Aaron and to his sons from the offerings made by fire[b] to the Lord, once they have been brought forward to serve the Lord as priests; 36 these the Lord commanded to be given them, when he anointed them, as a perpetual due from the Israelites throughout their generations.”

37 This is the rule of the burnt offering, the grain offering, the purification offering, the guilt offering, the offering of ordination, and the sacrifice of well-being,(D) 38 which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, when he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord, in the wilderness of Sinai.(E)

The Rites of Ordination

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take Aaron and his sons with him, the vestments, the anointing oil, the bull for the purification offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread;(F) and assemble the whole congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting.” And Moses did as the Lord had commanded him. When the congregation was assembled at the entrance of the tent of meeting, Moses said to the congregation, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.”

Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.(G) He put the tunic on him, fastened the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him. He then put the decorated band of the ephod around him, tying the ephod to him with it. He placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and the Thummim.(H) And he set the turban on his head, and on the turban, in front, he set the golden ornament, the holy diadem, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(I)

10 Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it and consecrated them.(J) 11 He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its utensils and the basin and its base, to consecrate them. 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.(K) 13 And Moses brought forward Aaron’s sons and clothed them with tunics and fastened sashes around them and tied headdresses on them, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(L)

14 He led forward the bull of purification offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bull for the purification offering,(M) 15 and it was slaughtered. Moses took the blood and with his finger put some on each of the horns of the altar, purifying the altar; then he poured out the blood at the base of the altar. Thus he consecrated it, to make atonement for it.(N) 16 Moses took all the fat that was around the entrails and the appendage of the liver and the two kidneys with their fat and turned them into smoke on the altar.(O) 17 But the bull itself, its skin and flesh and its dung, he burned with fire outside the camp, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(P)

18 Then he brought forward the ram of burnt offering. Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram,(Q) 19 and it was slaughtered. Moses dashed the blood against all sides of the altar. 20 The ram was cut into its parts, and Moses turned into smoke the head and the parts and the suet. 21 And after the entrails and the legs were washed with water, Moses turned into smoke the rest of the ram on the altar; it was a burnt offering for a pleasing odor, an offering by fire[c] to the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(R)

22 Then he brought forward the second ram, the ram of ordination. Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram,(S) 23 and it was slaughtered. Moses took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 24 After Aaron’s sons were brought forward, Moses put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears and on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet, and Moses dashed the rest of the blood against all sides of the altar. 25 He took the fat—the fatty tail, all the fat that was around the entrails, the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys with their fat—and the right thigh.(T) 26 From the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord, he took one cake of unleavened bread, one cake of bread with oil, and one wafer and placed them on the fat and on the right thigh.(U) 27 He placed all these on the palms of Aaron and on the palms of his sons and raised them as an elevation offering before the Lord. 28 Then Moses took them from their hands and turned them into smoke on the altar with the burnt offering. This was an ordination offering for a pleasing odor, an offering by fire[d] to the Lord.(V) 29 Moses took the breast and raised it as an elevation offering before the Lord; it was Moses’s portion of the ram of ordination, as the Lord had commanded Moses.(W)

30 Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood that was on the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his vestments and also on his sons and their vestments. Thus he consecrated Aaron and his vestments and also his sons and their vestments.(X)

31 And Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it,’(Y) 32 and what remains of the flesh and the bread you shall burn with fire.(Z) 33 You shall not go outside the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the day when your period of ordination is completed. For it will take seven days to ordain you;(AA) 34 as has been done today, the Lord has commanded to be done to make atonement for you.(AB) 35 You shall remain at the entrance of the tent of meeting day and night for seven days, keeping the Lord’s charge so that you do not die, for so have I been commanded.” 36 Aaron and his sons did all the things that the Lord had commanded through Moses.

Aaron’s Priesthood Inaugurated

On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf for a purification offering and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord.(AC) And say to the Israelites, ‘Take a male goat for a purification offering; a calf and a lamb, yearlings without blemish, for a burnt offering;(AD) and an ox and a ram for an offering of well-being to sacrifice before the Lord; and a grain offering mixed with oil. For today the Lord will appear to you.’ ” They brought what Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the whole congregation drew near and stood before the Lord. And Moses said, “This is the thing that the Lord commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord may appear to you.”(AE)

Mark 3:31-4:25

The True Kindred of Jesus

31 Then his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him.(A) 32 A crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers[a] are outside asking for you.” 33 And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

The Parable of the Sower

Again he began to teach beside the sea. Such a very large crowd gathered around him that he got into a boat on the sea and sat there, while the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.(B) He began to teach them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:(C) “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on a path, and the birds came and ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”(D) And he said, “If you have ears to hear, then hear!”(E)

The Purpose of the Parables

10 When he was alone, those who were around him along with the twelve asked him about the parables. 11 And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret[b] of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything comes in parables,(F) 12 in order that

‘they may indeed look but not perceive,
    and may indeed hear but not understand;
so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.’ ”(G)

13 And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.(H) 16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. 17 But they have no root and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.[c] 18 And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word, 19 but the cares of the age and the lure of wealth and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing. 20 And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold.”

A Lamp under a Bushel Basket

21 He said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket or under the bed and not on the lampstand? 22 For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light.(I) 23 If you have ears to hear, then hear!”(J) 24 And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and it will be added to you.(K) 25 For to those who have, more will be given, and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”(L)

Psalm 37:12-29

12 The wicked plot against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth at them,(A)
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he sees that their day is coming.(B)

14 The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows
    to bring down the poor and needy,
    to kill those who walk uprightly;(C)
15 their sword shall enter their own heart,
    and their bows shall be broken.(D)

16 Better is a little that the righteous person has
    than the abundance of many wicked.(E)
17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
    but the Lord upholds the righteous.(F)

18 The Lord knows the days of the blameless,
    and their heritage will abide forever;(G)
19 they are not put to shame in evil times;
    in the days of famine they have abundance.(H)

20 But the wicked perish,
    and the enemies of the Lord are like the glory of the pastures;
    they vanish—like smoke they vanish away.(I)

21 The wicked borrow and do not pay back,
    but the righteous are generous and keep giving;(J)
22 surely those blessed by the Lord shall inherit the land,
    but those cursed by him shall be cut off.(K)

23 Our steps[a] are made firm by the Lord
    when he delights in our[b] way;(L)
24 though we stumble, we[c] shall not fall headlong,
    for the Lord holds us[d] by the hand.(M)

25 I have been young and now am old,
    yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken
    or their children begging bread.(N)
26 They are ever giving liberally and lending,
    and their children become a blessing.(O)

27 Depart from evil, and do good;
    so you shall abide forever.(P)
28 For the Lord loves justice;
    he will not forsake his faithful ones.

The righteous shall be kept safe forever,
    but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.(Q)
29 The righteous shall inherit the land
    and live in it forever.(R)

Proverbs 10:5

A child who gathers in summer is prudent,
    but a child who sleeps in harvest brings shame.(A)
