Victory over the Amalekites(A)
8 (B)Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with (C)the rod of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And so it was, when Moses (D)held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands became [a]heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, (E)“Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that (F)I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, [b]The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; 16 for he said, “Because [c]the Lord has (G)sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
Jethro’s Advice(H)
18 And (I)Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that (J)God had done for Moses and for Israel His people—that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took (K)Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, 3 with her (L)two sons, of whom the name of one was [d]Gershom (for he said, (M)“I have been a [e]stranger in a foreign land”) 4 and the name of the other was [f]Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my (N)help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”); 5 and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at (O)the mountain of God. 6 Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”
7 So Moses (P)went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and (Q)kissed him. And they asked each other about their well-being, and they went into the tent. 8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how the Lord had (R)delivered them. 9 Then Jethro rejoiced for all the (S)good which the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said, (T)“Blessed be the Lord, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the Lord is (U)greater than all the gods; (V)for in the very thing in which they [g]behaved (W)proudly, He was above them.” 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, [h]took a burnt (X)offering and other sacrifices to offer to God. And Aaron came with all the elders of Israel (Y)to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.
13 And so it was, on the next day, that Moses (Z)sat to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening. 14 So when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone [i]sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?”
15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because (AA)the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 When they have (AB)a [j]difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws.”
17 So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. 18 Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; (AC)you are not able to perform it by yourself. 19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you [k]counsel, and God will be with you: Stand (AD)before God for the people, so that you may (AE)bring the difficulties to God. 20 And you shall (AF)teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and (AG)the work they must do. 21 Moreover you shall select from all the people (AH)able men, such as (AI)fear God, (AJ)men of truth, (AK)hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times. (AL)Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for (AM)they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their (AN)place in peace.”
24 So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 And (AO)Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26 So they judged the people at all times; the (AP)hard[l] cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves.
27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and (AQ)he went his way to his own land.
Israel at Mount Sinai
19 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on the same day, (AR)they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they had departed from (AS)Rephidim, had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Israel camped there before (AT)the mountain.
3 And (AU)Moses went up to God, and the Lord (AV)called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 (AW)‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how (AX)I [m]bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. 5 Now (AY)therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and (AZ)keep My covenant, then (BA)you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is (BB)Mine. 6 And you shall be to Me a (BC)kingdom of priests and a (BD)holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
7 So Moses came and called for the (BE)elders of the people, and [n]laid before them all these words which the Lord commanded him. 8 Then (BF)all the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” So Moses brought back the words of the people to the Lord. 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you (BG)in the thick cloud, (BH)that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.”
So Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and (BI)consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And let them be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 You shall set bounds for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch its base. (BJ)Whoever touches the mountain shall surely be put to death. 13 Not a hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with an arrow; whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come near the mountain.”
14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; (BK)do not come near your wives.”

34 (B)But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, (C)a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37 Jesus said to him, (D)“‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: (E)‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 (F)On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

41 (H)While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?”
They said to Him, “The (I)Son of David.”
43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying:
44 ‘The(J) Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’?
45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” 46 (K)And no one was able to answer Him a word, (L)nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.
Woe to the Scribes and Pharisees(M)
23 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, 2 saying: (N)“The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 Therefore whatever they tell you [a]to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for (O)they say, and do not do. 4 (P)For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. 5 But all their works they do to (Q)be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. 6 (R)They love the [b]best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ 8 (S)But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your [c]Teacher, [d]the Christ, and you are all brethren. 9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; (T)for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ. 11 But (U)he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 (V)And whoever exalts himself will be [e]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be [f]exalted.
7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice!
Have mercy also upon me, and answer me.
8 When You said, “Seek My face,”
My heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.”
9 (A)Do not hide Your face from me;
Do not turn Your servant away in anger;
You have been my help;
Do not leave me nor forsake me,
O God of my salvation.
10 (B)When my father and my mother forsake me,
Then the Lord will take care of me.
11 (C)Teach me Your way, O Lord,
And lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies.
12 Do not deliver me to the will of my adversaries;
For (D)false witnesses have risen against me,
And such as breathe out violence.
13 I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
(E)In the land of the living.
27 Can a man take fire to his bosom,
And his clothes not be burned?
28 Can one walk on hot coals,
And his feet not be seared?
29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;
Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.
30 People do not despise a thief
If he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.
31 Yet when he is found, (A)he must restore sevenfold;
He may have to give up all the substance of his house.
32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman (B)lacks understanding;
He who does so destroys his own soul.
33 Wounds and dishonor he will get,
And his reproach will not be wiped away.
34 For (C)jealousy is a husband’s fury;
Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
35 He will [a]accept no recompense,
Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.
