Snare

SNARE. A number of Heb. terms are used to denote methods for trapping men and animals. The terms and their meanings are: חָבַל֒, H2471, “to tie frequently יָקַשׁ, H3704, and the nominal form מﯴקֵשׁ, H4613, down,” “snare with a cord” (Job 18:10). More “to snare, entrap with bait,” “one who baits” (Exod 10:7; Jer 5:26). Fewer occurrences are known for several terms: מְצוּדָה֒, H5180, “to tie,” “to net” (Ezek 12:13). Job 18:9 presents the rare term שְׂבָכָה, H8422, see Wreath. The common term is פַּח֒, H7062, which may have some relationship to “to close.” In the OT it means an iron trap (Josh 23:13). In the NT there are two terms βροχος, “rope” (1 Cor 7:35); and παγις, “net,” “trap” or “snare” (Luke 21:34).
