Wreath

WREATH is the term used to tr. four different Heb. words in the OT. The most frequent is עֲבֹת, H6310, which appears in twenty-three passages in the OT, but is tr. as “wreath” in Exodus only. It is tr. “cords” in Ezekiel 3:25, and “branches” in Psalm 118:27 and similar passages; its essential meaning is “rope” or “cord.”

Less common is the term שְׂבָכָה, H8422, meaning a metal lattice work for decoration or use as a garment. This word may have an Akkad. origin and appears in the historical books of the OT, and in Job 18:8, 9 where it is tr. “snare.” The term גְּדִלִ֖ים is found only in Deuteronomy 22:12; 1 Kings 7:17 and late Heb. and is derived from Akkad. gidlu which means a “torque” or fringe of “gold interlace” and is connected with Aram. gediltā, “a braided rope.” The word שָׂרַג, H8571, appears only in Job 40:17 and Lamentations 1:14. It means “intertwine” as a woven basket.
