Hosea 6-9

A Call to Repentance

Come, let’s return to the Lord.(A)
For he has torn us,(B)
and he will heal us;(C)
he has wounded us,
and he will bind up our wounds.(D)
He will revive us after two days,(E)
and on the third day he will raise us up
so we can live in his presence.(F)
Let’s strive to know the Lord.(G)
His appearance is as sure as the dawn.(H)
He will come to us like the rain,(I)
like the spring showers that water the land.

The Lord’s First Lament

What am I going to do with you, Ephraim?(J)
What am I going to do with you, Judah?
Your love is like the morning mist(K)
and like the early dew that vanishes.
This is why I have used the prophets
to cut them down;[a](L)
I have killed them with the words from my mouth.
My judgment strikes like lightning.[b]
For I desire faithful love and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God(M) rather than burnt offerings.(N)

But they, like Adam,[c] have violated the covenant;(O)
there they have betrayed me.(P)

Gilead is a city of evildoers,(Q)
tracked with bloody footprints.(R)
Like raiders who wait in ambush for someone,(S)
a band of priests murders on the road to Shechem.(T)
They commit atrocities.(U)
10 I have seen something horrible(V) in the house of Israel:
Ephraim’s promiscuity is there;(W) Israel is defiled.

11 A harvest is also appointed for you, Judah.(X)
When I restore the fortunes of my people,(Y)

when I heal Israel,(Z)
the iniquity of Ephraim(AA) and the crimes of Samaria(AB)
will be exposed.
For they practice fraud;(AC)
a thief breaks in;
a raiding party pillages outside.(AD)
But they never consider that I remember all their evil.(AE)
Now their actions are all around them;(AF)
they are right in front of my face.

Israel’s Corruption

They please the king with their evil,(AG)
the princes with their lies.(AH)

All of them commit adultery;(AI)
they are like an oven heated by a baker
who stops stirring the fire
from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
On the day of our king,
the princes are sick with the heat of wine(AJ)
there is a conspiracy with traitors.[d]
For they—their hearts like an oven—
draw him into their oven.
Their anger smolders all night;
in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.

All of them are as hot as an oven,(AK)
and they consume their rulers.(AL)
All their kings fall;
not one of them calls on me.[e]
Ephraim has allowed himself to get mixed up with the nations.
Ephraim is unturned bread baked on a griddle.
Foreigners consume his strength,(AM)
but he does not notice.(AN)
Even his hair is streaked with gray,
but he does not notice.
10 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them,[f](AO)
yet they do not return to the Lord their God,(AP)
and for all this, they do not seek him.

11 So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove;(AQ)
they call to Egypt,(AR) and they go to Assyria.(AS)
12 As they are going, I will spread my net over them;(AT)
I will bring them down like birds of the sky.
I will discipline them in accordance
with the news that reaches[g] their assembly.

The Lord’s Second Lament

13 Woe to them,(AU) for they fled from me;(AV)
destruction to them, for they rebelled against me!
Though I want to redeem them,(AW)
they speak lies against me.
14 They do not cry to me from their hearts;
rather, they wail on their beds.
They slash themselves[h](AX) for grain and new wine;(AY)
they turn away from me.
15 I trained and strengthened their arms,(AZ)
but they plot evil against me.(BA)
16 They turn, but not to what is above;[i]
they are like a faulty bow.(BB)
Their leaders will fall by the sword
because of their insolent tongue.(BC)
They will be ridiculed for this in the land of Egypt.(BD)

Israel’s False Hopes

Put the ram’s horn to your mouth!(BE)
One like an eagle comes
against the house of the Lord,(BF)
because they transgress my covenant(BG)
and rebel against my law.(BH)
Israel cries out to me,(BI)
“My God, we know you!”
Israel has rejected what is good;(BJ)
an enemy will pursue him.

They have installed kings,(BK)
but not through me.
They have appointed leaders,
but without my approval.
They make their silver and gold(BL)
into idols for themselves
for their own destruction.[j]
Your calf-idol[k](BM) is rejected, Samaria.(BN)
My anger burns against them.
How long will they be incapable of innocence?(BO)
For this thing is from Israel—
a craftsman made it,(BP) and it is not God.
The calf of Samaria will be smashed to bits!

Indeed, they sow the wind(BQ)
and reap the whirlwind.(BR)
There is no standing grain;
what sprouts fails to yield flour.(BS)
Even if they did,
foreigners would swallow it up.
Israel is swallowed up!(BT)
Now they are among the nations
like discarded pottery.(BU)
For they have gone up to Assyria(BV)
like a wild donkey going off on its own.
Ephraim has paid for love.(BW)
10 Even though they hire lovers among the nations,
I will now round them up,
and they will begin to decrease in number(BX)
under the burden of the king and leaders.(BY)
11 When Ephraim multiplied his altars for sin,(BZ)
they became his altars for sinning.
12 Though I were to write out for him
ten thousand points of my instruction,(CA)
they would be[l] regarded as something strange.
13 Though they offer sacrificial gifts[m](CB)
and eat the flesh,(CC)
the Lord does not accept them.
Now he will remember their guilt(CD)
and punish their sins;(CE)
they will return to Egypt.(CF)
14 Israel has forgotten his Maker(CG) and built palaces;(CH)
Judah has also multiplied fortified cities.
I will send fire on their cities,(CI)
and it will consume their citadels.

The Coming Exile

Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly as the nations do,(CJ)
for you have acted promiscuously,(CK) leaving your God.
You love the wages of a prostitute
on every grain-threshing floor.(CL)
Threshing floor and wine vat will not sustain them,(CM)
and the new wine will fail them.
They will not stay in the land of the Lord.
Instead, Ephraim will return to Egypt,(CN)
and they will eat unclean food(CO) in Assyria.(CP)
They will not pour out
their wine offerings to the Lord,(CQ)
and their sacrifices will not please him.
Their food will be like the bread of mourners;
all who eat it become defiled.(CR)
For their bread will be for their appetites alone;
it will not enter the house of the Lord.
What will you do on a festival day,(CS)
on the day of the Lord’s feast?(CT)
For even if they flee from devastation,
Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them.(CU)
Thistles will take possession of their precious silver;
thorns will invade their tents.(CV)
The days of punishment have come;(CW)
the days of retribution have come.(CX)
Let Israel recognize it!
The prophet is a fool,(CY)
and the inspired man is insane,(CZ)
because of the magnitude
of your iniquity and hostility.(DA)
Ephraim’s watchman is with my God.
Yet the prophet encounters a bird trap
on all his pathways.(DB)
Hostility is in the house of his God!
They have deeply corrupted themselves(DC)
as in the days of Gibeah.(DD)
He will remember their iniquity;
he will punish their sins.(DE)

Ephraim Bereaved of Offspring

10 I discovered Israel
like grapes in the wilderness.(DF)
I saw your ancestors
like the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season.(DG)
But they went to Baal-peor,(DH)
consecrated themselves to Shame,[n](DI)
and became abhorrent,(DJ)
like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird:(DK)
no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.(DL)
12 Even if they raise children,
I will bereave them of each one.
Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!(DM)
13 I have seen Ephraim like Tyre,(DN)
planted in a meadow,
so Ephraim will bring out his children
to the executioner.
14 Give them, Lord
What should you give?
Give them a womb that miscarries
and breasts that are dry!(DO)

15 All their evil appears at Gilgal,(DP)
for there I began to hate them.
I will drive them from my house
because of their evil, wicked actions.(DQ)
I will no longer love them;
all their leaders are rebellious.(DR)
16 Ephraim(DS) is struck down;
their roots are withered;
they cannot bear fruit.(DT)
Even if they bear children,
I will kill the precious offspring of their wombs.(DU)
17 My God will reject them
because they have not listened to him;(DV)
they will become wanderers among the nations.(DW)

3 John

Greeting

The elder:(A)

To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.(B)

Dear friend, I pray that you are prospering in every way and are in good health,(C) just as your whole life is going well.[a] For I was very glad when fellow believers came and testified(D) to your fidelity to the truth—how you are walking in truth.(E) I have no greater joy(F) than this: to hear that my children(G) are walking in truth.

Gaius Commended

Dear friend, you are acting faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters, especially when they are strangers. They have testified to your love before the church.(H) You will do well to send them on their journey(I) in a manner worthy of God,(J) since they set out for the sake of the Name,(K) accepting nothing from pagans.[b](L) Therefore, we ought to support such people so that we can be coworkers with the truth.

Diotrephes and Demetrius

I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them,(M) does not receive our authority.(N) 10 This is why, if I come, I will remind him of the works he is doing, slandering(O) us with malicious words. And he is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome fellow believers, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church.

11 Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil,(P) but what is good. The one who does good is of God;(Q) the one who does evil has not seen God.(R) 12 Everyone speaks well of Demetrius—even the truth itself. And we also speak well of him, and you know(S) that our testimony is true.(T)

Farewell

13 I have many things to write you, but I don’t want to write to you with pen and ink. 14 I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face.

15 Peace to you. The friends send you greetings. Greet the friends by name.

Psalm 126

Psalm 126

Zion’s Restoration

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,[a]
we were like those who dream.(A)
Our mouths were filled with laughter then,(B)
and our tongues with shouts of joy.(C)
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”(D)
The Lord had done great things for us;
we were joyful.(E)

Restore our fortunes,[b] Lord,
like watercourses in the Negev.(F)
Those who sow in tears
will reap with shouts of joy.(G)
Though one goes along weeping,
carrying the bag of seed,
he will surely come back with shouts of joy,
carrying his sheaves.(H)

Proverbs 29:12-14

12 If a ruler listens to lies,(A)
all his officials will be wicked.

13 The poor and the oppressor have this in common:[a]
the Lord gives light to the eyes of both.(B)

14 A king who judges the poor with fairness—
his throne will be established forever.(C)
