Joshua 19-20

Simeon’s Tribal Lands

19 The second lot belonged to the tribe of Simeon by its clans.[a] Their assigned land was in the middle of Judah’s assigned land. Their assigned land included[b] Beer Sheba,[c] Moladah, Hazar Shual, Balah, Ezem, Eltolad, Bethul, Hormah, Ziklag, Beth Marcaboth, Hazar Susah, Beth Lebaoth, and Sharuhen—a total of thirteen cities and their towns, Ain, Rimmon, Ether, and Ashan—a total of four cities and their towns, as well as all the towns around these cities as far as Baalath Beer (Ramah of the Negev). This was the land assigned to the tribe of Simeon by its clans.[d] Simeon’s assigned land was taken from Judah’s allotted portion, for Judah’s territory was too large for them; so Simeon was assigned land within Judah.[e]

Zebulun’s Tribal Lands

10 The third lot belonged to the tribe of Zebulun[f] by its clans. The border of their territory[g] extended to Sarid. 11 Their border went up westward to Maralah and touched Dabbesheth and the valley near[h] Jokneam. 12 From Sarid it turned eastward[i] to the territory of Kisloth Tabor, extended to Daberath, and went up to Japhia. 13 From there it crossed eastward to Gath Hepher and Eth Kazin and extended to Rimmon, turning toward Neah. 14 It then turned on the north to Hannathon and ended at the Valley of Iphtah El. 15 Their territory included Kattah, Nahalal, Shimron, Idalah, and Bethlehem; in all they had twelve cities and their towns.[j] 16 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Zebulun[k] by its clans, including these cities and their towns.

Issachar’s Tribal Lands

17 The fourth lot belonged to the tribe of Issachar[l] by its clans. 18 Their assigned land[m] included Jezreel, Kesulloth, Shunem, 19 Hapharaim, Shion, Anaharath, 20 Rabbith, Kishion, Ebez, 21 Remeth, En Gannim, En Haddah and Beth Pazzez. 22 Their border touched Tabor, Shahazumah, and Beth Shemesh, and ended at the Jordan. They had sixteen cities and their towns. 23 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Issachar[n] by its clans, including these cities and their towns.

Asher’s Tribal Lands

24 The fifth lot belonged to the tribe of Asher[o] by its clans. 25 Their territory included Helkath, Hali, Beten, Acshaph, 26 Alammelech, Amad, and Mishal. Their border touched Carmel to the west and Shihor Libnath. 27 It turned eastward toward Beth Dagon, touched Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah El to the north, as well as Beth Emek and Neiel, and extended to Cabul on the north[p] 28 and on to Ebron,[q] Rehob, Hammon, and Kanah, as far as Greater Sidon. 29 It then turned toward Ramah as far as the fortified city of Tyre, turned to Hosah, and ended at the sea near Hebel, Achzib, 30 Umah, Aphek, and Rehob. In all they had[r] twenty-two cities and their towns. 31 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Asher[s] by its clans, including these cities and their towns.

Naphtali’s Tribal Lands

32 The sixth lot belonged to the tribe of Naphtali[t] by its clans. 33 Their border started at Heleph and the oak of Zaanannim, went to Adami Nekeb, Jabneel and on to Lakkum,[u] and ended at the Jordan River.[v] 34 It turned westward to Aznoth Tabor, extended from there to Hukok, touched Zebulun on the south, Asher on the west, and the Jordan[w] on the east. 35 The fortified cities included Ziddim, Zer, Hammath, Rakkath, Kinnereth, 36 Adamah, Ramah, Hazor, 37 Kedesh, Edrei, En Hazor, 38 Yiron,[x] Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh. In all they had[y] nineteen cities and their towns. 39 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Naphtali[z] by its clans, including these cities and their towns.

Dan’s Tribal Lands

40 The seventh lot belonged to the tribe of Dan[aa] by its clans. 41 Their assigned land included Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh, 42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah, 43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron, 44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath, 45 Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon, 46 the waters of Jarkon, and Rakkon, including the territory in front of Joppa. 47 (The Danites failed to conquer their territory,[ab] so they went up and fought with Leshem and captured it. They put the sword to it, took possession of it, and lived in it. They renamed it[ac] Dan after their ancestor.[ad]) 48 This was the land assigned to the tribe of Dan[ae] by its clans, including these cities and their towns.

Joshua Receives Land

49 When they finished dividing the land into its regions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun some land.[af] 50 As the Lord had instructed, they gave him the city he requested—Timnath Serah in the Ephraimite hill country. He built up the city and lived in it.

51 These are the land assignments that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders[ag] made by drawing lots in Shiloh before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting.[ah] So they finished dividing up the land.

Israel Designates Cities of Refuge

20 The Lord instructed Joshua: “Have the Israelites select[ai] the cities of refuge[aj] that I told you about through Moses. Anyone who accidentally kills someone can escape there;[ak] these cities will be a place of asylum from the avenger of blood. The one who committed manslaughter[al] should escape to one of these cities, stand at the entrance of the city gate, and present his case to the leaders of that city.[am] They should then bring him into the city, give him a place to stay, and let him live there.[an] When the avenger of blood comes after him, they must not hand over to him the one who committed manslaughter, for he accidentally killed his fellow man without premeditation.[ao] He must remain[ap] in that city until his case is decided by the assembly,[aq] and the high priest dies.[ar] Then the one who committed manslaughter may return home to the city from which he escaped.”[as]

So they selected[at] Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. Beyond the Jordan east of Jericho they selected[au] Bezer in the wilderness on the plain belonging to the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead belonging to the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan belonging to the tribe of Manasseh. These were the cities of refuge[av] appointed for all the Israelites and for resident foreigners living among them. Anyone who accidentally killed someone could escape there and not be executed by[aw] the avenger of blood, at least until his case was reviewed by the assembly.[ax]

Luke 19:28-48

The Triumphal Entry

28 After Jesus[a] had said this, he continued on ahead,[b] going up to Jerusalem.[c] 29 Now[d] when he approached Bethphage[e] and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives,[f] he sent two of the disciples, 30 telling them,[g] “Go to the village ahead of you.[h] When[i] you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden.[j] Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs[k] it.’” 32 So those who were sent ahead found[l] it exactly[m] as he had told them. 33 As[n] they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,[o] “Why are you untying that colt?” 34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.” 35 Then[p] they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks[q] on the colt,[r] and had Jesus get on[s] it. 36 As[t] he rode along, they[u] spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he approached the road leading down from[v] the Mount of Olives,[w] the whole crowd of his[x] disciples began to rejoice[y] and praise[z] God with a loud voice for all the mighty works[aa] they had seen:[ab] 38 Blessed is the king[ac] who comes in the name of the Lord![ad] Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 But[ae] some of the Pharisees[af] in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”[ag] 40 He answered,[ah] “I tell you, if they[ai] keep silent, the very stones[aj] will cry out!”

Jesus Weeps for Jerusalem under Judgment

41 Now[ak] when Jesus[al] approached[am] and saw the city, he wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had only known on this day,[an] even you, the things that make for peace![ao] But now they are hidden[ap] from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build[aq] an embankment[ar] against you and surround you and close in on you from every side. 44 They will demolish you[as]—you and your children within your walls[at]—and they will not leave within you one stone[au] on top of another,[av] because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”[aw]

Cleansing the Temple

45 Then[ax] Jesus[ay] entered the temple courts[az] and began to drive out those who were selling things there,[ba] 46 saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house will be a house of prayer,’[bb] but you have turned it into a den[bc] of robbers!”[bd]

47 Jesus[be] was teaching daily in the temple courts. The chief priests and the experts in the law[bf] and the prominent leaders among the people were seeking to assassinate[bg] him, 48 but[bh] they could not find a way to do it,[bi] for all the people hung on his words.[bj]

Psalm 88

Psalm 88[a]

A song, a psalm written by the Korahites, for the music director, according to the machalath-leannoth style;[b] a well-written song[c] by Heman the Ezrahite.

88 O Lord God who delivers me,[d]
by day I cry out
and at night I pray before you.[e]
Listen to my prayer.[f]
Pay attention[g] to my cry for help.
For my life[h] is filled with troubles,
and I am ready to enter Sheol.[i]
They treat me like[j] those who descend into the grave.[k]
I am like a helpless man,[l]
adrift[m] among the dead,
like corpses lying in the grave,
whom you remember no more,
and who are cut off from your power.[n]
You place me in the lowest regions of the Pit,[o]
in the dark places, in the watery depths.
Your anger bears down on me,
and you overwhelm me with all your waves. (Selah)
You cause those who know me to keep their distance;
you make me an appalling sight to them.
I am trapped and cannot get free.[p]
My eyes grow weak because of oppression.
I call out to you, O Lord, all day long;
I spread out my hands in prayer to you.[q]
10 Do you accomplish amazing things for the dead?
Do the departed spirits[r] rise up and give you thanks? (Selah)
11 Is your loyal love proclaimed in the grave,
or your faithfulness in the place of the dead?[s]
12 Are your amazing deeds experienced[t] in the dark region,[u]
or your deliverance in the land of oblivion?[v]
13 As for me, I cry out to you, O Lord;
in the morning my prayer confronts you.
14 O Lord, why do you reject me,
and pay no attention to me?[w]
15 I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth.[x]
I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain.[y]
16 Your anger overwhelms me;[z]
your terrors destroy me.
17 They surround me like water all day long;
they join forces and encircle me.[aa]
18 You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance;[ab]
those who know me leave me alone in the darkness.[ac]

Proverbs 13:12-14

12 Hope[a] deferred[b] makes the heart sick,[c]
but a longing fulfilled[d] is like[e] a tree of life.
13 The one who despises instruction[f] will pay the penalty,[g]
but whoever esteems direction[h] will[i] be rewarded.[j]
14 Instruction[k] from the wise is like[l] a life-giving fountain,[m]
to turn[n] a person[o] from deadly snares.[p]
