Numbers 10:1-11:23

The Blowing of Trumpets

10 [a] The Lord spoke to Moses: “Make[b] two trumpets of silver; you are to make[c] them from a single hammered piece.[d] You will use them[e] for assembling the community and for directing the traveling of the camps. When[f] they blow[g] them both, all the community must come[h] to you to the entrance of the tent of meeting.

“But if they blow with one trumpet, then the leaders, the heads of the thousands of Israel, must come to you.[i] When you blow an alarm,[j] then the camps that are located[k] on the east side must begin to travel.[l] And when you blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that are located on the south side must begin to travel.[m] An alarm must be sounded[n] for their journeys. But when you assemble the community,[o] you must blow the trumpets,[p] but you must not sound an alarm.[q] The sons of Aaron, the priests, must blow the trumpets, and they will be to you for an eternal ordinance throughout your generations. If you go to war in your land against an adversary who opposes[r] you, then you must sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the Lord your God, and you will be saved[s] from your enemies.

10 “Also, in the time when you rejoice, such as[t] on your appointed festivals or[u] at the beginnings of your months, you must blow with your trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, so that they may[v] become[w] a memorial for you before your God: I am the Lord your God.”

The Journey From Sinai to Kadesh

11 [x] On the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle of the testimony.[y] 12 So the Israelites set out[z] on their journeys from the desert[aa] of Sinai; and the cloud settled in the wilderness of Paran.

Judah Begins the Journey

13 This was the first time they set out on their journey according to the commandment[ab] of the Lord, by the authority[ac] of Moses.

14 The standard[ad] of the camp of the Judahites set out first according to their companies, and over his company was Nahshon son of Amminadab.

15 Over the company of the tribe of Issacharites was Nathanel son of Zuar, 16 and over the company of the tribe of the Zebulunites was Eliab son of Helon. 17 Then the tabernacle was dismantled, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari set out, carrying the tabernacle.

Journey Arrangements for the Tribes

18 The standard of the camp of Reuben set out according to their companies; over his company was Elizur son of Shedeur. 19 Over the company of the tribe of the Simeonites was Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai, 20 and over the company of the tribe of the Gadites was Eliasaph son of Deuel. 21 And the Kohathites set out, carrying the articles for the sanctuary;[ae] the tabernacle was to be set up[af] before they arrived.[ag] 22 And the standard of the camp of the Ephraimites set out according to their companies; over his company was Elishama son of Ammihud. 23 Over the company of the tribe of the Manassehites was Gamaliel son of Pedahzur, 24 and over the company of the tribe of Benjaminites was Abidan son of Gideoni.

25 The standard of the camp of the Danites set out, which was the rear guard[ah] of all the camps by their companies; over his company was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 Over the company of the tribe of the Asherites was Pagiel son of Ocran, 27 and over the company of the tribe of the Naphtalites was Ahira son of Enan. 28 These were the traveling arrangements[ai] of the Israelites according to their companies when they traveled.[aj]

The Appeal to Hobab

29 [ak] Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel, the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law,[al] “We are journeying to the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well,[am] for the Lord has promised good things[an] for Israel.” 30 But Hobab[ao] said to him, “I will not go, but I will go instead to my own land and to my kindred.” 31 Moses[ap] said, “Do not leave us,[aq] because you know places for us to camp in the wilderness, and you could be our guide.[ar] 32 And if you come with us, it is certain[as] that whatever good things the Lord will favor us with, we will share with you as well.”

33 So they traveled from the mountain of the Lord three days’ journey;[at] and the ark of the covenant of the Lord was traveling before them during the three days’ journey, to find a resting place for them. 34 [au] And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day, when they traveled[av] from the camp. 35 And when the ark traveled, Moses would say, “Rise up, O Lord! May your enemies be scattered, and may those who hate you flee before you!” 36 And when it came to rest he would say, “Return, O Lord, to the many thousands of Israel!”[aw]

The Israelites Complain

11 [ax] When the people complained,[ay] it displeased[az] the Lord. When the Lord heard[ba] it, his anger burned,[bb] and so[bc] the fire of the Lord[bd] burned among them and consumed some of the outer parts of the camp. When the people cried to Moses, he[be] prayed to the Lord, and the fire died out.[bf] So he called the name of that place Taberah[bg] because there the fire of the Lord burned among them.

Complaints about Food

[bh] Now the mixed multitude[bi] who were among them craved more desirable foods,[bj] and so the Israelites wept again[bk] and said, “If only we had meat to eat![bl] We remember[bm] the fish we used to eat[bn] freely[bo] in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic. But now we[bp] are dried up,[bq] and there is nothing at all before us[br] except this manna!” (Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium. And the people went about and gathered it, and ground it with mills or pounded it in mortars; they baked it in pans and made cakes of it. It tasted like fresh olive oil.[bs] And when the dew came down[bt] on the camp in the night, the manna fell[bu] with it.)

Moses’ Complaint to the Lord

10 [bv] Moses heard the people weeping[bw] throughout their families, everyone at the door of his tent; and when the anger of the Lord was kindled greatly, Moses was also displeased.[bx] 11 And Moses said to the Lord, “Why have you afflicted[by] your servant? Why have I not found favor in your sight, that[bz] you lay the burden of this entire people on me? 12 Did I conceive this entire people?[ca] Did I give birth to[cb] them, that you should say to me, ‘Carry them in your arms, as a foster father[cc] bears a nursing child,’ to the land that you swore to their fathers? 13 From where shall I get[cd] meat to give to this entire people, for they cry to me, ‘Give us meat, that we may eat!’[ce] 14 I am not able to bear this entire people alone,[cf] because it[cg] is too heavy for me! 15 But if you are going to deal[ch] with me like this, then kill me immediately.[ci] If I have found favor in your sight then do not let me see my trouble.”[cj]

The Response of God

16 [ck] The Lord said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know are elders of the people and officials[cl] over them, and bring them to the tent of meeting; let them take their position there with you. 17 Then I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take part of the Spirit that is on you, and will put it on them, and they will bear some of the burden of the people with you, so that you do not bear it[cm] all by yourself.

18 “And say to the people, ‘Sanctify yourselves[cn] for tomorrow, and you will eat meat, for you have wept in the hearing[co] of the Lord, saying, “Who will give us meat to eat,[cp] for life[cq] was good for us in Egypt?” Therefore the Lord will give you meat, and you will eat. 19 You will eat, not just one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 but a whole month,[cr] until it comes out your nostrils and makes you sick,[cs] because you have despised[ct] the Lord who is among you and have wept before him, saying, “Why[cu] did we ever come out of Egypt?”’”

21 Moses said, “The people around me[cv] are 600,000 on foot;[cw] but you say, ‘I will give them meat,[cx] that they may eat[cy] for a whole month.’ 22 Would they have enough if the flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? If all the fish of the sea were caught for them, would they have enough?” 23 And the Lord said to Moses, “Is the Lord’s hand shortened?[cz] Now you will see whether my word to you will come true[da] or not!”

Mark 14:1-21

The Plot Against Jesus

14 Two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the chief priests and the experts in the law[a] were trying to find a way[b] to arrest Jesus[c] by stealth and kill him. For they said, “Not during the feast, so there won’t be a riot among the people.”[d]

Jesus’ Anointing

Now[e] while Jesus[f] was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper,[g] reclining at the table,[h] a woman came with an alabaster jar[i] of costly aromatic oil[j] from pure nard. After breaking open the jar, she poured it on his head. But some who were present indignantly said to one another, “Why this waste of expensive[k] ointment? It[l] could have been sold for more than 300 silver coins[m] and the money[n] given to the poor!” So[o] they spoke angrily to her. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a good service for me. For you will always have the poor with you, and you can do good for them whenever you want. But you will not always have me![p] She did what she could. She anointed my body beforehand for burial. I tell you the truth,[q] wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”

The Plan to Betray Jesus

10 Then[r] Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus into their hands.[s] 11 When they heard this, they were delighted[t] and promised to give him money.[u] So[v] Judas[w] began looking for an opportunity to betray him.

The Passover

12 Now[x] on the first day of the feast of[y] Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed,[z] Jesus’[aa] disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”[ab] 13 He sent two of his disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar[ac] of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Wherever he enters, tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” 16 So[ad] the disciples left, went[ae] into the city, and found things just as he had told them,[af] and they prepared the Passover.

17 Then,[ag] when it was evening, he came to the house[ah] with the twelve. 18 While they were at the table[ai] eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth,[aj] one of you eating with me will betray me.”[ak] 19 They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who dips his hand[al] with me into the bowl.[am] 21 For the Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.”

Psalm 51

Psalm 51[a]

For the music director, a psalm of David, written when Nathan the prophet confronted him after David’s affair with Bathsheba.[b]

51 Have mercy on me, O God, because of[c] your loyal love.
Because of[d] your great compassion, wipe away my rebellious acts.[e]
Wash away my wrongdoing.[f]
Cleanse me of my sin.[g]
For I am aware of[h] my rebellious acts;
I am forever conscious of my sin.[i]
Against you—you above all[j]—I have sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
So[k] you are just when you confront me;[l]
you are right when you condemn me.[m]
Look, I was guilty of sin from birth,
a sinner the moment my mother conceived me.[n]
Look,[o] you desire[p] integrity in the inner man;[q]
you want me to possess wisdom.[r]
Cleanse me[s] with hyssop[t] and I will be pure;[u]
wash me[v] and I will be whiter than snow.[w]
Grant me the ultimate joy of being forgiven.[x]
May the bones[y] you crushed rejoice.[z]
Hide your face[aa] from my sins.
Wipe away[ab] all my guilt.
10 Create for me a pure heart, O God.[ac]
Renew a resolute spirit within me.[ad]
11 Do not reject me.[ae]
Do not take your holy Spirit[af] away from me.[ag]
12 Let me again experience the joy of your deliverance.
Sustain me by giving me the desire to obey.[ah]
13 Then I will teach[ai] rebels your merciful ways,[aj]
and sinners will turn[ak] to you.
14 Rescue me from the guilt of murder,[al] O God, the God who delivers me.
Then my tongue will shout for joy because of your righteousness.[am]
15 O Lord, give me the words.[an]
Then my mouth will praise you.[ao]
16 Certainly[ap] you do not want a sacrifice, or else I would offer it;[aq]
you do not desire a burnt sacrifice.[ar]
17 The sacrifice God desires is a humble spirit[as]
O God, a humble and repentant heart[at] you will not reject.[au]
18 Because you favor Zion, do what is good for her.[av]
Fortify[aw] the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will accept[ax] the proper sacrifices, burnt sacrifices and whole offerings;
then bulls will be sacrificed[ay] on your altar.[az]

Proverbs 10:31-32

31 The speech[a] of the righteous bears the fruit of wisdom,[b]
but the one who speaks perversion[c] will be destroyed.[d]
32 The lips of the righteous know[e] what is pleasing,[f]
but the speech[g] of the wicked is perverse.
