3:2–4 This search for her lover either follows the girl’s night of dreaming, or is itself one of her dreams. The presence of watchmen patrolling the city streets indicates that it is night, and that this is probably a dream. The parallel in 5:2–8 is a dream (5:2). Both dreams have a nightmarish quality, the one in ch. 5 more obviously than this one (see especially 5:7).
