18:4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters. The sense of the clause is either that a common person’s words are obscure, or a wise person’s words are profound. If the former meaning is taken, then line two contrasts such obscurity with the clarity of wisdom. If the wise are in view, line two develops the theme. The ambiguity may be deliberate, leaving the application open.
