During the time in the wilderness Manasseh had increased from 32,200 to 52,700 (cf. 1:35 and 26:34). Reuben and Gad settled territory already conquered (vv. 33–38), but the half-tribe of Manasseh went further north and made new conquests (vv. 39–42).
