12:1 Cushite. Cush is the region south of Egypt. Zipporah the Midianite (Ex. 2:16–21) might have been referred to as “an Ethiopian,” but the directness of the explanation that Moses “had married a Cushite woman” suggests that Zipporah had died and Moses had married again.
