The phrase continues the series of similar phrases (2:10 note) and brings the reader back to the main topic of Neh. 1:1–7:3, from which ch. 5 was a digression (5:1–13 note). The conflict that has been steadily escalating here reaches its climax, as the wall is virtually complete. This final attempt to stop the work is threefold: to harm (vv. 2–4), to frighten (vv. 5–9), and to discredit (vv. 10–13) Nehemiah.
