Geshem the Arab. This third opponent of Nehemiah was probably an Arab chief controlling the area south of Judah. Nehemiah is pictured as virtually surrounded by enemies—Sanballat to the north, Tobiah to the east, and Geshem to the south (4:7, 8 note).
