27:34 gall. Any of several bitter herbs; Mark mentions myrrh. Commentators often note that myrrh mixed with wine is a painkiller. But the offer of galled wine was probably not a gesture of compassion but of mockery, as in Ps. 69:21. Jesus’ thirst would have been great, but the gall made the wine undrinkable.
