you who are poor. Luke is especially concerned with the blessings that the gospel brings to the poor (see notes 1:46–55, 51–53; Ps. 9:18 note). Poverty can be a curse (Prov. 30:8, 9), and disciples know that they must rely on God for all things. They have no resources of their own and are “poor,” but God blesses them with “the kingdom.”
