3:3 baptism of repentance. The Jews baptized Gentiles if they wished to become part of the people of God. The sting in John’s practice was his call on Jews to undergo a rite they saw as fit only for Gentiles. John looked for a change of heart in Jews. See notes Matt. 3:6; Mark 1:4.
