27:28 devoted. Property and persons devoted to God (i.e., placed under the ban) were irrevocably to be placed in the service of God (v. 28), or utterly destroyed (v. 29). This solemn vow was probably pronounced by national leaders, often in time of war (Num. 21:2; 1 Sam. 15) or against those practicing idolatry (Deut. 13:16; 20:17 note).
