13:14 the tribe of Levi. Levi was Jacob’s third son, born to Leah (Gen. 29:34; 34:25; 49:5 and notes). That Levi received no allotment of land from either Moses or Joshua is explained here and in v. 33 (also 14:3, 4; 18:7). See Deut. 18:1–8. The twelve tribes of Israel are counted in various ways in the Old Testament. For the division into twelve territories the descendants of Joseph are counted as two tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh (14:4; Gen. 48:5).
