25:5, 6 a maggot . . . a worm. Bildad risks overstating the depth of human worthlessness because he has a pessimistic view of man (cf. Eliphaz in 15:14–16). The doctrine of total depravity is not pessimistic. Even in sin human beings retain the image of God, giving each person dignity and value.
