7:2 the house of David. This expression means the current head of the house, Ahaz. It recalls the Lord’s covenant with David, granting him an eternal offspring and kingdom (2 Sam. 7:12–16). The attempt to replace his dynasty with another (“the son of Tabeel,” v. 6) cannot succeed because God’s promises are at stake.
