50:1 mother’s. The inhabitants of Jerusalem who were taken into the Babylonian exile are here figuratively described as God’s wife.
certificate of divorce. Had the Lord issued such a divorce, He could not have taken Israel back (Deut. 24:1–4; Jer. 3:1, 8).
creditors. Had the Lord sold Israel to creditors, He would have lost authority over their destiny (cf. 2 Kin. 4:1; Neh. 5:5).
for your iniquities. Since Israel was sold in payment for the debt of her sins, the Redeemer had the responsibility to buy them back (41:14; 52:3).
