Isa 14:9–11

14:9–11 Sheol. Isaiah uses the popular conception of the realm of the dead with its shadowy figures welcoming newcomers in an ironic description of Babylon’s fall and her descent into the lower regions. The use of these conventional ideas is poetic, and is not intended as a theology of the afterlife. See 5:14 and note; Prov. 1:12; 9:18 and notes.
