covenant. The first of seventeen occurrences of this important word (Greek diatheke) in Hebrews. It is the usual translation of the Old Testament word for “covenant” (Hebrew berith) in the Greek Old Testament. A “new covenant” was promised in Jer. 31:31–34, which will be cited in 8:8–12 and 10:16, 17.
