The divine promise and oath (Gen. 22:17) was God’s response to Abraham’s attempted sacrifice of Isaac, the child of divine promise (Gen. 12:2; 15:4–6), in obedience to divine direction (Gen. 22:2). In the birth and then the rescue of Isaac (Gen. 21:1–3; 22:11, 12), Abraham did receive the promised blessing of offspring. Nevertheless, he did not see the complete fulfillment of those covenantal promises (11:39, 40; cf. Rom. 4:13, 16, 17).
