3:7–4:13 The writer quotes Ps. 95:7–11, and then uses numerous brief quotations and echoes of it to keep his exposition to the point. Important key words in this section are “today” (3:13, 15; 4:7) and “rest” (4:3, 5, 6, 8–11); the treatment of “rest” is developed from the Sabbath teaching of Gen. 2:2. Corresponding to this teaching is the exhortation to “enter that rest” (4:11) and the warning not to “harden your hearts” (3:15; 4:7).
