40:13 lift up your head. A Hebrew idiom often meaning “restore to honor” or “release” (2 Kin. 25:27; Ps. 24:7). Here it may refer more particularly to a ritual audience with Pharaoh in which the servant is singled out for special attention (v. 20). Note the pun in v. 19, where a slight variation in the Hebrew gives the meaning “lift off your head” (perhaps a reference to execution by decapitation).
