25:1–18 The genealogies that precede (vv. 1–4) and follow (vv. 12–18) the account of Abraham’s death (vv. 7–11) are of Abraham’s natural sons. They highlight that the offspring through Sarah is miraculous, that Abraham’s many natural offspring in no way disadvantage Isaac’s inheritance in the land (vv. 5–6), and that the elect one has a blood relation, but not a spiritual bond, with the natural offspring. Isaac was Abraham’s “only son” of promise (22:2 and note).
