Gen 2:4–3:24

2:4–3:24 This story presents the fall of Adam and Eve from innocence into sin. Though historical persons (1 Chr. 1:1; Matt. 19:5; Luke 3:23–38; Rom. 5:12–14; 1 Cor. 15:45), Adam and Eve also represent every man and woman (2:24; 3:16–19; Matt. 19:4–6). The chief actor throughout is God: He forms the man (v. 7; Job 10:8–12), plants the garden (Ps. 87:1; Matt. 16:18), sovereignly places man in it (v. 15; Eph. 1:3–14), orders his life (vv. 16, 17; Ps. 31:15), gives him his wife (vv. 18–25; Matt. 19:6), judges the first parents for their sin, and restores them (ch. 3; Heb. 9:27, 28).
