3:6 Abraham was the father of the Jews and the person with whom God first established circumcision as a covenantal sign (Gen. 17:10). Even this revered patriarch was placed in a right relationship with God by faith (Rom. 4:11). Paul reverses the charge that he is undercutting God’s covenant with Abraham. The true children of Abraham share his faith, whether they are physically descended from him or not. The promise to Abraham is also a promise of blessing to the Gentiles, a blessing that must be received with faith like Abraham’s.
