6:5 Stephen . . . Nicolaus. All seven men had Greek names, which may point to their being Jews from the Dispersion, although many Palestinian Jews also had Greek names. Attributes are listed for the first and last of the seven: for Stephen (“full of faith and of the Holy Spirit”) who appears in 6:8–7:60, and for Nicolaus, “a proselyte of Antioch.” Antioch soon became a center of missionary activity. Philip’s later ministry to Samaria and to the Ethiopian eunuch is described in ch. 8.
