4:27 Herod and Pontius Pilate . . . Gentiles . . . peoples of Israel. The believers properly understood that both Jews and Gentiles were responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus. These were Herod Antipas, who was the son of Herod the Great and tetrarch (i.e., subordinate ruler under the Romans) of Galilee and Perea (Luke 3:1; 23:6, 7) and Pontius Pilate, who was the Roman procurator (governor) of Palestine from a.d. 26–36 (Luke 3:1; 23:1–24). The chief priests and elders persuaded the people to reject Jesus and ask for Barabbas (Matt. 27:20–26).
