2 Sam 2:1

2:1 David inquired of the Lord. Though aware of his divine appointment to become Israel’s next king, David seeks the Lord’s guidance, as he has done so often before (e.g., 1 Sam. 23:2, 4, 9–12; 30:7, 8).

Hebron. Located nineteen miles southwest of Jerusalem, Hebron has the highest elevation of any town in Israel and was strategically well suited for the inauguration of David’s rule over Judah. Hebron was a Canaanite royal city when the Israelites came from Egypt (Josh. 10:3), but its links with the people of God extend back to the patriarchs (e.g., Gen. 13:18; 23:2, 19; 35:27).
