16:11 let him curse. David refuses to silence Shimei for several reasons. The Lord has prompted him to curse (v. 10); if his own son wants to kill him, how much more a kinsman of Saul; if the cursing is unjust, the Lord may repay David with good (v. 12). David’s ready submission to God’s judgment is consistent with his character (12:20–23; 15:26) and reminiscent of Eli (1 Sam. 3:18 note).
