14:9 A thistle. The northern kingdom was larger and more powerful than the southern kingdom (1 Kin. 14:30; 15:16, 17 and notes). In this fable (cf. Judg. 9:8–15) the little thistle (Amaziah) thinks it is equal to a cedar of Lebanon (Jehoash) only to be trampled underfoot.
