11:39 but not forever. This phrase looks forward to a restoration of Davidic power. Such a restoration was attempted by Josiah of Judah, but he could not complete it (2 Kin. 22; 23). The prophets also look for a renewal of Davidic rule (Jer. 30:9; Ezek. 34:23; 37:15–28; Hos. 3:5; Amos 9:11). These hopes are fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Messiah (Matt. 1:1; Mark 1:1).
