ZABDIEL zăb’ dĭ əl (זַבְדִּיאֵ֑ל, LXX Ζαβδίηλ, meaning “gift of God,” my gift is El [God]). The name is known at Palmyra as Zabd-ila, and in Akkad. as Zab-di-ilu. 1. Father of Jashobeam, one of David’s senior officers in charge of a section of the army. His course of duty lay during the first month of the year (1 Chron 27:2). He was a descendant of Perez of the tribe of Judah and so was distantly related to David.

2. A prominent official (Heb. פָּקִיד, H7224), in the days of Nehemiah (Neh 11:14), overseer of a group of priests living in Jerusalem. He was the son of Haggedolim.

3. An Arab who beheaded Alexander Balas when he fled to Arabia and sent his head to Ptolemy Philopator (1 Macc 11:17; Jos. Antiq. 13:4:8).
