Window

WINDOW. the tr. of several Heb. and Gr. words, the more frequent being חַלּﯴן, H2707, and θυρίς, G2600, a rectangular opening in the wall. Archeological evidence indicates wide variation in size, frequency, ornamentation, and closers. Numerous windows occurred in Jeremiah’s time in wealthy houses for the sake of ornamentation and were the object of his scorn (Jer 22:13, 14). Bas reliefs show them frequently barred, either by stone grilles or wood lattice, ornamented by projecting or recessed molds. Some windows opened onto balconies. Sisera’s mother looked through the grating for him (Judg 5:28). Solomon’s House of the Forest had three rows of windows (1 Kings 7:4), prob. in the Syrian style. Windows also occurred in the Temple, prob. located in the Holy Place, high in the wall to admit light to the area. Closers for windows were mats, curtains, or wooden panels, glass being unknown, to protect from severe cold or wind. Gratings, much like louvered shutters, shielded the watcher from outside observers.
