UNICORN (רְאֵם, H8028). A mythical horselike beast having a single horn growing from the center of its forehead. This is, however, not the animal referred to in the Bible (Num 23:22; 24:8; Deut 33:17; Job 39:9, 10; Pss 22:21; 29:6; 92:10; Isa 34:7), in which the KJV calls it a UNICORN, but the ASV and RSV, a WILD OX. It is undoubtedly the rimu often figured on the sculptures of the Assyrians, which is prob. identical with the auroch. In the OT it is described as being large and strong, wild and fierce, and very dangerous when hunted. It could not be tamed by man to assist him in his agricultural labors. It is now extinct. See Ox.
