ULCER (עֹ֫פֶל֒, H6754, KJV EMEROD. See also Tumor). An ulcer is a breakdown of skin or mucous membrane in a localized area with gradual destruction of the flesh underneath. Some are on the outside of the body; others involve internal organs. Probably the most common ulcer in Biblical times was the tropical ulcer, seen principally on the legs, and occasionally were so severe that it consumed the flesh to the bone. Lack of adequate proteins and vitamins, plus injury, uncleanliness, infection, and impaired local circulation, were some of the factors initiating and continuing the ulcer.
