Ulai

ULAI ûlī (אוּלָֽי, LXX, Οὐλαι). The stream or artificial irrigation canal near Susa, the capital in SW Persia, where Daniel heard the sound of a man’s voice (Dan 8:2, 16). It is difficult to identify today owing to topographical change which can be swift and confusing in sand and alluvial silt. Professor D. J. Wiseman (NBD, p. 1304) suggests that the present upper Kherkhah and lower Karun Rivers may in ancient times have been a single stream debouching into the delta at the head of the Persian Gulf. The river appears in reliefs of Ashurbanipal’s assault on Susa in 640 b.c. With sanguinary relish typical of Assyrian inscrs. the monarch claims to have reddened the Ulai with blood. The classical name was Eulaeus.
