Twined Linen

TWINED LINEN (שֵׁ֣שׁ מָשְׁזָ֗ר). A superior quality of fine linen made from yarn of which each thread was composed of many delicate strands. The Egyptians were experts in work of this kind. Herodotus (3:47) says that Amasis, king of Egypt (564-526 b.c.), sent someone a corselet of which each thread consisted of 360 separate strands, all of them clearly visible. Twined linen was used to make the curtains, veil, and door hangings of the Tabernacle (Exod 26:1, 31, 36), the hangings for the gate of the court and for the court itself (27:9, 16, 18), and also the ephod, the girdle of the ephod, and the breastplate of the high priest (Exod 28:6, 15; 39:2, 5, 8, 24, 29).
