Tribune

TRIBUNE trĭb’ un (χιλίαρχος, G5941, commander of a thousand). A Rom. military officer in command of a cohort, which numbered on paper 760 infantrymen and 240 cavalrymen (Acts 21:31, 33, 37, etc.; KJV CHIEF CAPTAIN); roughly the equivalent of a colonel. The “captain” of the Rom. soldiers who seized and bound Jesus in Gethsemane was actually a tribune (John 18:12).
