Sweat

SWEAT, or perspiration, is mentioned in both testaments. The Heb. term זֵעָה, H2399, is found only in Genesis 3:19 wherein sweat represents one of the calamitous results of the Fall. A verbal form appears in Ezekiel 44:18. In the NT, the term ἱδρώς, G2629, appears only in Luke 22:44 in the narrative of Christ’s passion. The word is common in classical Gr. from Homer and usually indicates great tension or pain as in suffering and death. The NT term undoubtedly refers to the Genesis 3:19 passage as the LXX uses the same term for the Heb. The wrestling of Christ with Satan before God in Gethsemane in all points fulfilled the curse of sweat upon fallen man in Eden. Bloody sweat, hematidrosis, is reported in medical lit.
